Athens man sentenced to 14 years for cocaine

Marcquis Deevermont Utley, 34 of Athens was sentenced to 14 years and also to a month at the Medical Insurance Rehab to get clean before entering jail, the sentence was in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice after pleading guilty to the second degree felony offense of Possession of a Controlled Substance on July 9 in Judge Carter Tarrance’s 392nd Judicial District Court.

Utley was arrested on Feb. 4 of last year after Trinidad Police Officer Cody Speak attempted to pull Utley over for speeding on State Highway 31. Utley did not pull over at first and instead proceeded to a gas station.

Speak followed Utley to the gas station and attempted to make contact with him. Utley was uncooperative, and eventually a struggle ensued which resulted in Speak using his taser on Utley. Trinidad man convicted of Theft from Elderly

It took less than 15 minutes for a Henderson County jury on Tuesday to find Brian Keith Fugett, 36, of Trinidad guilty of Theft From an Elderly Person in the 392nd District Court. The case was prosecuted by District Attorney Scott McKee’s Office.

Fugett, along with his girlfriend Brandi Melton, were arrested in August 2012 by the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office for the offense.

According to Sheriff’s reports and testimony at trial, Fugett and Hyde were hired by an 84-year-old woman’s daughters to help care for their elderly mother who was also suffering from Alzheimer’s. Continue reading “Trinidad man convicted of Theft from Elderly”

District-wide seal coat operations begin Monday

The Texas Department of Transportation’s annual preventative maintenance program known as District-Wide Seal Coat is scheduled to begin Monday in Henderson County, then move through all eight counties of the Tyler District and treat nearly 300 miles of roadway before concluding work in August.

Crews are scheduled to seal most of US 175 between Athens and the Kaufman County Line, then move into Anderson County by the weekend, weather permitting.

“Seal coat is a fast-moving operation,” said TxDOT spokesman Larry Krantz. “It’s also cost-effective. We can seal six miles of road for the cost of one mile of hot mix, and the seal coat will last longer.”
