Early Voting in Local Elections Begins Monday, April 28

Early voting for local elections begins next Monday, April 28, and will run through Tuesday, May 6. Election Day is Saturday, May 10.

The following elections are scheduled around Henderson County:

ATHENS

City: There are three contested races for the Athens City Council. In Place 1, Joe Whatley takes on Carol Barton; in Place 2, Charles Elliott faces Aubrey Jones; and in Place 3, Tres Winn is running against Elaine Jenkins. In addition, there will be one proposition on the ballot. The proposition reads:

Approve City of Athens Ordinance No. 0-01-14 abolishing and dissolving the Athens Municipal Water Authority, eliminating the associated ad valorem tax assessed and collected by the Authority, and vesting the City of Athens will all assets and operations of the Authority.

AMWA: Four candidates are running for two open seats on the Athens Municipal Water Authority Board. They are: Mike Peek, Herbert Gatlin, Gregory Hisey, and William “Billy” Carter.

CANEY CITY

There are three open seats on the Caney City City Council. Candidates are: Lawanda Robertson, Pat Mayfield, Lamar Mathews, Randy Reeder, and Claude Miller.

CHANDLER

Voters in Chandler will be electing three City Council members. Candidates include: Michael Chandler, Janeice Lunsford, James Allison, M.E. “Gene” Giger, and Don Daniell.

CROSS ROADS ISD

Cross Roads ISD residents must make a decision on a $4.5 million bond in May’s election. Plans call for about $500,000 of the bond to be used for repairs and improvements to existing facilities and the rest to build a 29,000 square-foot gym which will double as a student event center. GUN BARREL CITY

Two men — Paul Eaton and Jim Braswell — will face each other to be mayor of Gun Barrel City. In the Place 2 Council seat race, Ron Wyrick is running unopposed.

MABANK ISD

There is only one contested race in Mabank ISD’s board elections. In Place 4, Mike Cathey will take on Erik Tijerina. In other races, Jeremy Zmolik (Place 2) and Todd Grimes (Place 5) are unopposed.

MABANK

There are three seats open for the Mabank City Council. Candidates include: John Chappell, Shannon Steakley, Dennis Terry, and Jody Ferrell.

SEVEN POINTS

The Seven Points mayor’s race will see Bill Hash up against Gerald Taylor. In City Council races, Cheryl Jones and Karon Flagg are unopposed.

TOOL

There is a busy ballot in Tool where seven candidates are vying for three seats. Candidates include: Randy Whitehurst, Cindy Clounch, Mike Barr, Rick Williams, Fran Sonka, Kathryn Pinnell, and A.J. “Red” Phillips.

TxDOT Update Week of April 14

Texas Department of Transportation maintenance crews are scheduled to continue resurfacing operations on US 175 between FM 804 east of Athens and FM 315 in Poynor. #safezone

A second crew is scheduled to perform resurfacing operations on FM 59 in Athens between SH 19 and Loop 7.

Daytime lane closures will be in effect in each location while the work is in progress, and flaggers will control traffic.

The 2014 Henderson County Livestock Show will get underway next Monday, April 7, and run through Saturday, April 12.

This year, there will be no entry fee for the Livestock Show thanks to some special sponsors. The HCLS Committee thank the following businesses for sponsoring the gate for the 2014 show:

TxDOT Update

Texas Department of Transportation maintenance crews this week are scheduled to continue resurfacing operations on US 175 between FM 804 east of Athens and FM 315 in Poynor.

Elsewhere, TxDOT maintenance crews are scheduled to perform fog seal operations on FM 1615 south of Athens, FM 2636 south of Malakoff, and FM 3062 between Malakoff and Star Harbor.

Daytime lane closures will be in effect while the work is in progress, and flaggers will control traffic.

Looking ahead to the week of April 14, construction crews are scheduled to begin work to add shoulders to FM 317 between FM 314 south of Brownsboro and FM 315 south of Chandler.

No Gate Fees For HCLS 2014

Big news on the Henderson County Livestock Show front … there will be no gate fees this year because a few participating businesses have picked up the tab!

This year’s show will be from April 7-12.
