TxDOT Update for Week of May 26

As early as Wednesday this week, TxDOT contract crews are scheduled to perform seal coat operations on the following roadways:

·  West Loop 7 between FM 59 and FM 1616

·  FM 59 between SH 19 in Athens and FM 753

·  US 175 east of Athens between FM 804 and FM 315 (Saturday)

TxDOT’s seal coat program seals nearly 300 centerline miles of roadway each summer, extending the maintenance-free service life of those roadways by as much as 10 years or more. Local TxDOT crews have been preparing sections of these roadways over the past year in preparation for sealing.

Daytime lane closures will be in effect in each location while the work is in progress, and flaggers will control traffic. Motorists are encouraged to seek alternate routes if possible to avoid long delays associated with the work.

Ken McGee, Jr. Named Agriculturalist of the Year

They share a name and now they share an award.

Tuesday afternoon, Ken McGee, Jr., was named the winner of the 2014 Joe B. Fulgham Agriculturalist of the Year Award. His father won the award in 1993.

“I always try to follow in his footsteps,” McGee said after receiving the award.

The Agriculturalist of the Year was presented by Julie Moore and Rick Hirsch at the Athens Chamber of Commerce 51st Annual Farm & Ranch Tour luncheon, held at the Cain Center.

“This means a lot to me because I’ve put my whole life into Henderson County Agriculture,” McGee said. “Through my job, my education, my work and the livestock show.”

SLIDESHOW: Cornerstone Leveling

At the Henderson County Courthouse Centennial celebration, the Athens Masonic Lodge with the assistance of the Grand Lodge of Texas performed a reenactment of the leveling of the cornerstone just like it was done 100 years ago.

TxDOT UPDATE – Week of May 19

Texas Department of Transportation maintenance crews this week are scheduled to continue resurfacing operations in various locations on FM 1615 between SH 19 south of Athens and the end of state maintenance.

A second crew is scheduled to conclude resurfacing work on FM 59 in Athens between SH 19 and Loop 7.

Daytime lane closures will be in effect in each location while the work is in progress, and flaggers will control traffic.
