I received multiple questions about smoke around Henderson County today, so I contacted the Henderson County Fire Marshal’s Office. According to the Fire Marshal, there were a couple of factors leading to the smoke.
The Henderson County Black History Committee started 2015 off with a BANG!
The Annual “We Love Our Youth” program was held Sunday, Feb. 1, at Mt. Providence Baptist Church in Athens with Rev. Ernest K. Browning as host pastor.
With over 100 adults and youth in attendance, the excitement built as they waited to hear from Mrs. Vernesta Edwards and the new kid on the block, Rev. John Taylor, III; pastor of Rockhill Baptist Church, Larue.
The program was handled by the youth from different churches in the Henderson County area. Mistress of Ceremony Sis. Kanicia Sallie called the service to order and everyone sang the Negro National Anthem “Lift Every Voice & Sing.” Continue reading “Black History Committee Holds Annual Youth Program”
February is a month for showing love. That thought is what has inspired the staff at the Henderson County Library to forgive users’ fines.
“We have been working hard to bring new books, services and opportunities to Henderson County, and we do not want fines to prevent anyone from checking out what we have to offer,” said Library Director Rachel Cox.
The Henderson County Library worked diligently in 2014 to provide new library services to members of the community. From a brand new website featuring an extensive e-book collection and online language learning software to a new outreach service that allows a librarian to share stories at local daycares, HCL has definitely made some impressive changes. Texas Department of Transportation maintenance crews in Athens are planning to conduct edge repair work on FM 773 from SH 31 to the Van Zandt County line, and also on FM 1616 from FM 773 to SH 31. This is a moving operation and includes the use of a truck mounted attenuator (TMA). Crews will also be doing edge repairs on U.S. 175 from FM 804 (Baxter) to the Anderson County line this week. Flaggers will provide traffic control to help motorists travel safely through the work zone.
A TMA, also called a crash cushion, is a safety mechanism attached to the back of a truck and is designed to reduce damage to people, vehicles and equipment in a work zone should a crash occur.
Elsewhere, the FM 317 widening project from FM 314 to FM 607 continues to experience a delay due to the weather. The contractor will finish laying hot mix and conducting ditch work as weather permits.
On Tuesday, Dec. 2, Henderson County Sheriff’s Deputy Kenny Collard was dispatched to a residence in the sub-division of Golden Oaks to investigate a report of stolen property. Deputy Collard made contact with the complainants at that residence and investigated the scene and observed numerous places in two different buildings where copper wire and copper tubing had been cut and removed. After receiving information that the suspects may be at a nearby address, Deputy Collard went to the location and observed Vessier in possession of copper believed to be the same copper stolen from the complainants. Vessier was transported to the Henderson County Justice Center in Athens where he was charged with two counts of Burglary of a Building and Theft of Copper (both charges are state jail felonies punishable by up to 2 years in a state jail and a fine reaching 10,000 for each count).
