Flash Flood Watch Issued for Henderson County

weather-alertThe National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Watch for Henderson County from Tuesday morning through Thursday evening.

A tropical system will make landfall on the South Texas Coast on Tuesday and move northward through North and Central Texas by Thursday evening. Widespread rain and thunderstorms will be capable of producing flash flooding and river flooding.

Widespread rainfall of 2 to 4 inches with isolated higher amounts are possible.

Thunderstorms associated with this tropical system will be efficient rainfall producers. Excessive rainfall will lead to flash flooding and will re-aggravate river flooding.

The federal disaster declaration has been expanded to include Individual Assistance for Henderson County as a result of the severe storms, tornadoes, straight-line winds and flooding that began May 4, according to the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Disaster assistance for homeowners and renters may include grants to help pay for rent, temporary housing and home repairs, as well as other serious disaster-related needs, such as medical and dental expenses or funeral and burial costs. He’s In Heels to Fight Domestic Violence

After a week’s delay because of rain, the 2015 Walk A Mile in Her Shoes event went off as expected Saturday, June 6, with men taking four laps around the Henderson County Courthouse while wearing red high heel shoes.

Saturday marked the third time the Walk has taken place in the county.

The Walk is a fun event, but with a serious goal: To remind the community of the causes and effects of domestic violence and sexual violence. It is also a fundraiser for the East Texas Crisis Center, which is “dedicated to providing safety, shelter, and education for victims of family violence, sexual assault, and other violent crime.” Continue reading “He’s In Heels to Fight Domestic Violence”

Nichols Says 84th Legislation Session a Success

On Monday, the 84th Legislative Session came to a close, marking another successful session for the people of Texas.

“Serving the people of Senate District 3 has been one of the greatest honors of my life,” said Sen. Robert Nichols (R-Jacksonville). “Working with my colleagues in the Legislature, I believe we passed legislation this session which will be beneficial to East Texas and the State of Texas.”

As a first time member of the Senate Finance Committee, Nichols played an integral role in determining the state’s budget for the next biennium. The Legislature finalized and approved a $209.4 billion budget which will boost funding for border security, public schools and roads in the state.
