Longtime Rootseekers member Ruth Shelton, who now lives in Crowley, Texas, came all the way to the Tri-County Library to tell us the history of Rachel Donelson Jackson. Ruth said she always felt sympathy for Rachel when she found out about her history. Seems the American people treated Rachel pretty mean when her husband Andrew Jackson was running for President of the United States in 1828.
Rachel was born in 1767 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, the eighth of eleven children. In 1779 the entire family moved to East Tennessee, as part of an expedition that was going to settle in the Middle Tennessee area. Rachel traveled Continue reading “Rootseekers hear about Rachel Jackson”
