4-H One Day Project at Senior Center

Each year, 4-H members across the state host a One Day 4-H service project. The project’s mission is to serve the local community where there is a need and to demonstrate the power of youth coming together on this “one day” to give back to their communities and make a difference.

Saturday, Henderson County 4-H members completed a service project at the Henderson County Senior Citizens Center at the fairgrounds in Athens. The members landscaped the grounds of the center with plants that were donated by the Henderson County Master Gardeners, replaced old benches, and provided photographs taken by 4-H members as art for the center. The beautification project was organized by 4-H member Peter Cole, 12, of Timber Trails 4-H club, whose main 4-H project ls horticulture.

“We knew that (the center) needed it,” said Cole. “We wanted to do it as a way to give back for them letting us have our meetings here.”

“I am very impressed by Peter’s initiative to take this project on, talk with community members, seek donations, and see it through to completion. He started the project wanting to give back to the community center that is used by many different groups in the community, including 4-H. Along the way, he has developed leadership skills that will serve him a lifetime” said Carolyn Tyler, Henderson County 4-H agent.

Cedar Creek Amateur Radio Club Reaches Out

CCLARC-award-1At the recent Mabank Jubilee, the Cedar Creek Amateur Radio Club booth featured a working ham radio station. The club challenged its members to make as many short wave radio contacts as possible to compete for a prize. At the end of the day, members had contacted 30 states and one Canadian province. New DAR Members

IMG_0073Regent Helen Preston and Registrar Geneice Morris welcomed Ann Hall, Susan Cheek and Clara Roundtree, newly sworn in members, into the Sarah Maples Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution recently. These ladies have worked hard to get their papers in order with lots of help from the registrar and Ruth Shelton. Working to find proof of an ancestors Revolutionary War service can be a challenge. The Sarah Maples Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution met at the Methodist Church in Tool on Sept. 17, to celebrate the Constitution.

Scott McKee, another lover of the United States Constitution, agreed to be the speaker at the luncheon. Scott spoke of when he was in law school that they did not teach the Constitution. It is the most important document that our government has and therefore important to our laws so why is it not taught in law school? He still is waiting for that answer. As District Attorney for Henderson County he makes sure his staff knows the Constitution because he feels very strongly how important it is.

The DAR opens each meeting with another part, the Preamble to the Constitution. “We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America”.

We are hoping Scott will come visit us again. We all enjoyed his thoughts on the Constitution as we feel the same way about the Constitution and our Country.

National 4-H Week
