Since 1986, Labor of Love has been providing free home repairs to those who can no longer maintain their homes “due to age, disability or other circumstances beyond their control.”

The faith-based organization averages 130 to 140 projects a year and has had an incredible impact on the people of Henderson County, one ramp and one repair at a time.

HCN’s Tim Howard sat down recently with Athens Samaritans Labor of Love President Roy Talbot to talk about the program. (Listen to the podcast above for some great stories from Roy Talbot)

Talbot says Labor of Love covers the entire county.

“Trinidad to Chandler and all points in between,” he said.

Applicants do go through a screening process stating their income level, age and circumstances.

“In 99 percent of the cases we see it is obvious that the home repairs are needed,” said Talbot.

Labor of Love spotlights four major groups: the handicapped, indigent elderly, single mothers raising children, and grandmothers raising grandchildren.

“Our primary focus is health and safety issues,” Mr. Talbot said.

Talbot said that includes things like installing grab bars in the bathroom, widening bathroom doors to accommodate wheelchairs, changing out bathtubs for standing showers and, of course, installing wheelchair ramps.

“One of the neat things about our organization is, for the volunteers and the project managers, they can immediately see the difference in the life of that person,” said Talbot.

Labor of Love works all year long.

“All of my searching across the internet convinces me that we are unique in the nation,” Talbot said. “That is an amazing statement to make. There are other organizations that are similar, but none do what we do.”

Major contributors for the program are Henderson County United Way, the Cain Foundation, the Murchison Foundation, other foundations, churches, businesses, and individuals.

LaPoynor ISD fills three buses for hurricane relief efforts

It was a lesson in humanity … and LaPoynor ISD aced the test.

Wednesday afternoon, three LaPoynor school buses pulled into the Help Center parking lot in Athens to unload nearly 45,000 items collected for Hurricane Harvey relief.

It was an incredible sight and triple the original goal, according to LaPoynor ISD Superintendent James Young.

“We thought if we filled just (one bus), that would be an outstanding effort,” he said, “and that bus was filled up in two days.”

It only took a week to collect all the items.

Young said the effort at the district mirrored what was happening in the community.

“The people in the community there around LaPoynor are very, very caring people, and when they saw the devastation in the Houston area their hearts went out to (the people there),” he said.

School district officials wanted to help, so they came up with a plan.

“We decided to put a little contest together by grade level and the families in the community, the kids in the district, the administrators working there all pulled together to really make this come to fruition,” Young said.

Jannell Dunnington of the Athens Unit Salvation Army said that the donations were practical, everyday items.

“Our folks that are down in South Texas that are in Houston and Rockport and La Marque, and there are so many cities that have been effected,” she said. “This is something that can go in their hands and be used immediately, whether it is the people who have been effected or the workers who are down there.”

She praised the LaPoynor effort.

“The Henderson County Help Center, the Salvation Army Athens Service Unit could not have done this without a community coming together, LaPoynor community coming together, and saying it’s Texas and they’ve been effected, therefore let’s do something about it,” Dunnington said.

The relief supplies will be sent south a little bit at a time with area churches.

“Churches know that there are people down there hurting and that there are people down there that need their help,” Dunnington said. “That’s what we’re seeing from our church community in Henderson County and all over the State of Texas. They want to be a part of the healing process and healing begins with someone putting a hand to someone else and saying, ‘I’m there for you.'”

Dr. Campbell

By Ed Busch/Special to HCN

Fifteen years ago about now, a bunch of us, led by Dr. Glen Campbell, ventured out into the world of non-profit spay/neuter at Cedar Creek Lake … 38,000 surgeries later, we have become a force to be reckoned with!

Founded by Sandy Ward, Ed Busch and Sydney Busch, Friends of the Animals has so many wonderful volunteers and staff, plus the addition two-years ago of Dr. Robert Garcia to handle the non-surgical services from 10-2 and with the expansion of the space – well, we are a force! We have several volunteers and staff who have been with us since Day One: Joy Simmons, Janice Hunt, Lou Wiley, Leslie Kelly, and vet tech Holly Press.
