Local Students Part of Government-in-Action Youth Tour

Madelaine Walker, left, from Malakoff High School and Lydia Burns from Martin’s Mill High School are on their way to Washington, D.C. They’ll join 1,500 other students from across America for the 2015 Government-in-Action Youth Tour.‪

The National Rural Electric Cooperative Association has partnered with GenerationOn for the trip, which takes place in June of each year. Highlights include a visit to congressional offices, tours of historic monuments, memorials and the Smithsonian Institute. The tour group will travel to Arlington National Cemetery, Washington National Cathedral, the Supreme Court, and to the Library of Congress, as well as other special attractions.

Keep Athens Beautiful, Arboretum to host ECO Camp

Keep Athens Beautiful and The East Texas Arboretum will host an ECO Camp for children Kindergarten through 4th Grade. The camp will run July 27-31, Monday through Friday.

ECO Camp is designed for children to participate in activities relating to the environment through arts and crafts, science, music/storytelling, and games. Each day will have a theme centered around littering, recycling, water conservation, trees and more. The activities will include hiking, making a garbage pizza, learning about oil and water and more. Each day we will have a short lesson about the day’s theme, read a great story, learn some funny songs to sing and enjoy the out of doors. He’s In Heels to Fight Domestic Violence

After a week’s delay because of rain, the 2015 Walk A Mile in Her Shoes event went off as expected Saturday, June 6, with men taking four laps around the Henderson County Courthouse while wearing red high heel shoes.

Saturday marked the third time the Walk has taken place in the county.

The Walk is a fun event, but with a serious goal: To remind the community of the causes and effects of domestic violence and sexual violence. It is also a fundraiser for the East Texas Crisis Center, which is “dedicated to providing safety, shelter, and education for victims of family violence, sexual assault, and other violent crime.” Continue reading “He’s In Heels to Fight Domestic Violence”
