ess14480422473431During the month of November, the Malakoff High School Student Council had a fundraiser for the Cedar Creek Lake Humane Society and the Food Pantry. The students were able to purchase feathers for a teacher or an administrator and the teacher and administrator with the most feathers on their turkey had to kiss a pig in front of the school. They raised almost $300 for the Cedar Creek Humane Society, and donated over 100 cans of food for the Food Pantry in Malakoff. Jamie Driskell, Belinda Merritt, and Laurie Boze won the opportunity to kiss the pig. (Courtesy photo)

Giving to students in need

Doated baskets

Members of the First United Methodist Church of Athens donated 10 Thanksgiving baskets to Athens ISD to be given to the families of students in need of assistance. The Methodist church, along with additional anonymous donors, also supplied 70 hygiene kits to student services to use for homeless students and at-risk youth. “If any other churches or organization would like to help our students, we would encourage them to adopt a student as a Christmas Angel,” said AISD Parent Liaison Yadira Chairez. Those interested in helping can call 903-677-6913 or email [email protected]. Last week, District Attorney Scott McKee, District Clerk Betty Herriage and Sheriff Ray Nutt along with 1st Assistant D.A. Mark Hall presented a $500 check to Ann Hall of the Henderson County Rainbow Room. The check was from the Henderson County Go Blue non-profit organization. McKee and Herriage are officers of the organization, which raises awareness of child abuse and neglect throughout Henderson County. County Attorney Clint Davis is also a member and supporter of Go Blue.

“The Rainbow Room is a great organization in our community,” said McKee.

“When a child is removed from a home by CPS, he or she often leaves home with nothing, or just a couple of personal items,” said past president Ann Hall. “Once they go to foster care, their needs are provided for. But, in-between, the state doesn’t provide any funds for clothes, or whatever they need. We provide brand new clothes, shoes, school supplies, back packs, diapers, personal-hygiene items, even birthday parties their parents may have forgotten about, because of drug problems.”
