Amateur or ham radio is known for short-wave communications around the Earth and that’s an important and fun aspect of the hobby, but technology marches on. Today, licensed ham radio operators can put an app on their tablet or phone and connect to almost anywhere on the planet.
The service is called Echolink and the numbers are amazing. There are more than 200,000 validated users worldwide — in 151 of the world’s 193 nations — with about 6,000 online at any given time.
Echolink is the topic of the next meeting of the Cedar Creek Amateur (ham) Radio Club. One of our repeater stations features Echolink and we’re going to show you how easy and fun it is to use.

The Gun Barrel City Masonic Youth Rainbow Girls installed new officers on January 13. Emily Currey was installed as Worthy Advisor, and the theme for her term is “She Believed She Could, So She Did.” Her motto is “Imagine with all your mind, believe with all your heart, achieve with all your might;” colors are silver, gold, and blue; flower, the Plumeria; mascot, the Vixen (female fox); and her scripture is “For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”–Jeremiah 29:11. Samantha Ramos was installed in the office of Charity, Tara Trimmins to Hope, and Laura Walters to Faith. Kate Maxwell and Olivia Ocanas were appointed to the Bow Stations of Love (represented by the rainbow ray of red) and Religion (represented by the rainbow ray of orange) respectively. Mrs. Tonya Currey serves as Mother Advisor, and Mr. Dennis Currey will serve as Rainbow Dad. The girls received awards recognizing their service hours and memory work. Installing Officers were: Ms. Carrie Currey, Installing Officer; Mrs. Marsha Currey, Special Installing Marshal and Chaplain; Lauren Zelenske, Marshal; Mrs. Cheryl Nix, Recorder; and Mrs. Donna Dean, Musician. Following the Installation Ceremony, everyone retired to the Banquet Hall to enjoy sandwiches, chips, dips, fruit kabobs, lemonade, punch, and cake. After these festivities, the girls delivered personal hygiene items to the residents at Forever Family in Kemp.

The Gun Barrel City Masonic Youth Rainbow Girls inducted one new member into their Pledge group on Saturday, January 6–Crissy Ray. Parents and grandparents were in attendance at the induction ceremony. Crissy’s older sister Samantha Ramos is a Grand Representative to Colorado/Kansas in the Texas Grand Assembly of Rainbow Girls and helped to induct her.
After the Induction Ceremony, Pledges were installed into their new offices: Heavenlee Weldon as Pledge Sister; Caylee Weldon as Associate Pledge Sister; Mason Phillips as Sister of Happiness; Siddalee Ocanas as Sister of Kindness; and Crissy Ray as Sister of Confidence. Mrs. Tonya Currey was installed as Pledge Mother. Installing Officers were Gun Barrel City #369 Rainbow Girls: Samantha Ramos, Installing Pledge Sister; Emily Currey, Installing Marshal; Laura Walters, Installing Chaplain; Tara Trimmins, Installing Secretary; and Mrs. Donna Dean, Installing Musician.
Feet firmly on the ground. Although that could be good life advice for anybody, the reference here is to radio.
And there is no such thing as one ground that will work for everything. When Ben Franklin experimented with kites during stormy weather, he found the power of lightning. He went on to invent the lightning rod or arrestor to protect structures from destruction.
Held on the Second Saturday of each month by Friends of the Animals, the next low-cost vaccination and microchip clinic for all area residents is on Saturday, January 13, from 10 am-noon.
It will be held at the Friends’ clinic in the southeast corner of Highways 198 and 334 in Gun Barrel City in the red brick office strip just behind and east of the Huddle House Restaurant. No appointment is necessary.
