The Athens Economic Development Corporation (AEDC) was named a 2016 Community Economic Development Award winner by the Texas Economic Development Council. The award was presented at a special awards luncheon held Thursday, October 20, at the TEDC’s Annual Conference at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in San Antonio.

The Community Economic Development Awards program recognizes exceptional contributions cities toward the economic vitality of their communities and the state of Texas through creativity, leadership, and partnership in the achievement of business retention, business recruitment and community improvement.

The AEDC won the award for its work turning the Biotech Manufacturing Center fiasco into a positive.

New business advisor at TVCC Small Business Development Center

Trinity Valley Community College’s Small Business Development Center (SBDC) is pleased to announce the addition of Jennifer Johnston as Business Advisor. Johnston replaces Tracy Irby, who recently left to join a business plan writing service.

“Jennifer brings a background providing accounting services to for profits and not-for-profits both as an employee and self-employed individual,” said SBDC Director Mike Ellsberry. “Her research skills will aid more informed business decisions so critical to success in these highly competitive times.”

Dust off your flip-flops and get out your most comfortable island attire because it’s time for Luau 2016.

Last fall, the Cedar Creek Lake Area Chamber of Commerce introduced a brand new fundraising event that turned out to be immensely popular and successful; so successful that they’re making preparations for a repeat.

On Saturday, Sept. 17, the beautiful East Texas Arboretum and Botanical Society at 1601 Patterson Road in Athens will be transformed into a Hawaiian-themed venue and attendees will be treated to authentic Hawaiian fare for dinner and professional entertainment. Keola’s Hula Halau & The Hawaiian Serenaders will be back, bringing the songs and dances of Polynesia. New on the program this year will be Poly Hwy, an island-style Reggae Group for dancing or listening pleasure. Also new to the entertainment line-up will be a Hawaiian fire dancer!

It’s time for Leadership Athens 2016-2017. Deadline for all applications this Friday, Aug. 12.

The Leadership Athens (Formally known as Athens Leadership Institute or “ALI”) has been opening the minds and hearts of many in this community for 30 years. The many opportunities of leadership enrichment started with the first session in 1983 graduating in 1984.

Leadership Athens is a program of the Athens Chamber of Commerce that endeavors to train both existing and emerging leaders in the knowledge and skills to help them make a real difference in the Athens Community.
