AEDC announces second call for Business Assistance Grant applications

AEDC’s Business Assistance Grant program encourages exterior improvements to properties located within the designated beautification area, along the western and northern corridors of Athens. Businesses must apply by May 4 to be considered for 2018 funding.

Athens Economic Development Corporation is announcing a second call for Business Assistance Grant applications due to grant funding that remains available following approval of the first round of eligible projects.

AEDC has awarded nearly $90,000 in matching grant funds to businesses located along the western corridor of Athens, since the Business Assistance Grant program’s inception in 2014. AEDC Board of Directors has approved new additions to this year’s program. Furthermore, first-time applicants will have an opportunity to receive a higher percentage of matching funds.

CCL Area Chamber of Commerce schedules awards banquet

The 2018 Cedar Creek Lake Area Chamber of Commerce Awards Banquet is slated for March 19 at Cedar Creek Country Club.

The winners of all the awards are chosen from nominations submitted by their peers and are representative of the spirit of volunteerism in our community and in the chamber family. Athens Chamber to host business speed dating at luncheon

The Athens Chamber of Commerce has your Valentine’s date.

With this month’s chamber luncheon falling on Feb. 14, organizers are putting something a little different together: a business speed dating session. The original idea was to provide discreet dating for married people but soon, the idea lost credibility as soon as it went around.

There are quite a lot of single folk in this area and although most of them use Skipthegames and other online dating sites to meet one another, it’s quite nice to actually meet someone face to face too, hence this speed dating extravaganza. Chamber President Marisa Gunstanson said a bell will ring every 3-5 minutes to allow everyone to get up and meet new people. The goal is to meet five new business contacts. The top bar allows you to rotate through your Google accounts that you added into the Local Viking account. This could even be local guide accounts that you added specifically for reporting purposes. In theory, you could also quickly report and rotate through your Google Guide Accounts and mass report listings. City of Athens offers Downtown Façade Improvement Program again

For the second consecutive year, the City of Athens is pleased to offer the Downtown Façade Improvement Program to qualifying downtown property owners. In Fiscal Year 2017, the Athens City Council approved the creation of the Downtown Façade Improvement Program. This new and exciting program is designed to help improve aesthetic qualities and preserve historic structures in the Athens downtown area.

“The first year of the program was a huge success,” said Community Services Coordinator Adrianna Hinds. “The City received over 10 applications for requests for improvements ranging from $5,000 to $50,000 and, after administrative review, was able to fund 6 of them.” She added, “we look forward to another successful year in 2018 and encourage downtown property owners to take advantage of this funding opportunity.”

The annual Athens Chamber of Commerce Gala will be held Friday, Jan. 19, at the Athens Country Club. The cocktail hour will begin at 5:30 p.m. with dinner at 7 p.m. and the live auction at 8:30 p.m. The theme for this year is “Run for the Roses,” from the Kentucky Derby.
