Musicians who are interested in helping the many people in the local community affected by the recession can now benefit from their helping hand. Guitars Etc. is teaming up with the Independent Music Store Owners Group, D’addario and SIT strings for their fifth annual Food for Strings food drive. The event is taking place on Saturday, November 22nd from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Musicians need to bring at least four non-perishable food items or cash donation (suggested $5 or 5 canned goods), and the experienced staff will give them a brand new set of D’addarioor SIT strings. For a $10 donation Guitars Etc will install the strings, oil the fretboard and polish the guitar. All food collected and cash donations collected will be donated to the East Texas Food Bank. Athens Country Club GM Earns CCE Designation

cindyLast week, Athens Country Club General Manager Cindy Davis completed the Club Managers Association of America’s BMI V (Business Management Institute) at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. This is a final class in a 10-year journey that will give Davis the Certified Chief Executive (CCE) designation. This designation is to recognize those managers who have shown the ability to successfully serve as the most senior manager in a club. Once she has completed her petition to CMAA for her designation, she will join only a few dozen club managers worldwide who have attained this hallmark of professionalism. Davis is the on the far right on the bottom row in the photo.

Weinstein Law ‘Bra Line’ Collects 81 Bras for Breast Cancer Awareness

20141103_090115Randi McCullough and Evey Hernandez of Weinstein Law sort through 81 bras which were left on the “Bra Line” at the office to raise money and awareness to fight breast cancer.

Weinstein Law says thank you to everyone who participated. Jeff Weinstein will be donated $500 to the Texas-based National Breast Cancer Foundation because of the fundraiser.

The bras will be donated to the Eastern Hills Church of Christ Clothing Pantry (Joy Works).

Brian Malone Resigns from Athens EDC

Athens Economic Development Corporation President/CEO Brian Malone has tendered his resignation.

Malone announced the move during the AEDC board meeting Tuesday. His last day with the AEDC will be Nov. 6.

Malone said when he came here that he wanted Athens to be his last move, but that he and his wife are needed in the Houston area to help family.

“We just had to make a decision to change,” he said.

Malone will be taking over as vice president of the Pearland EDC.

“I feel very blessed that something like that would come up (where we could be closer to family),” he said. “The Lord works in mysterious ways sometimes.”

On Tuesday, the AEDC board voted to immediately begin the process to find Malone’s replacement.

The board of Directors of the Athens Economic Development Corporation (AEDC) selected officers for the Corporation at its annual meeting on Oct. 7. AEDC is funded by a ½ cent sales tax for economic development in the City of Athens for economic development. The Corporation is governed by a seven-member Board which is appointed by the City of Athens City Council.

Officers for the new year are: President Jess Laird, Vice President Maurice Cox, Treasurer Jeaneane Lilly, Secretary Carmen Hunt.

Laird replaces outgoing Board President David Holdredge. Holdredge was president of the board the previous year and has served on the board since January 2008. Holdredge will be recognized at the Athens Partnership Center’s Open House on Oct. 24. Continue reading “Athens EDC Selects New Officers”
