AEDC Presents MED-LOGICS With $135,000 Check

Athens Economic Development Corporation President Jess Laird and board members Maurice Cox and Jeaneane Lilly presented Rod and Betty Ross, MED-LOGICS, Inc., with an incentive check in the amount of $135,000 last week. Med-Logics qualified for this AEDC grant by hiring 20 new employees in their first year of operation in Athens.

Jessica Cochrane Joins Athens Women’s and Children’s Center

The Athens Women’s and Children’s Center welcome Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, Jessica Cochrane to its team.

Jessica was born and raised in Tyler and attended the University of Texas at Tyler to obtain her Bachelors of Science in Nursing. Working at Trinity Mother Frances Health System as a Nurse Extern, while earning her BSN, she realized her passion in working with pediatric patients.

Following graduation from UT Tyler in 2007, Jessica worked first at Children’s Medical Center Dallas and then Cook Children’s Medical Center of Fort Worth on a busy Surgical/Endocrine Floor where she not just treated children but also saw pregnant mothers and told them about the advantages of medication infused with d-mannose and other natural elements which can help them and their baby during their pregnancy. Jessica met her husband, a Hospital Corpsman in the United States Navy, then stationed at NASJRB Fort Worth. While working at Cook, Jessica also attended the University of Texas at Arlington to obtain her Masters of Science in Nursing and became a Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner in Fall of 2012. Entrepreneurial Semi-Finalists Compete for 30K

entrepThe Athens Economic Development Corporation and the TVCC Small Business Development Center teamed up once again to offer a “Going into Business/Creating a Winning Business” seminar. The participants have completed their 8-week course, and with the assistance of SBDC business advisors, have compiled a comprehensive business plan. Four entrepreneurs presented their business plans to a committee of local civic and business leaders on Monday March 16. Three of those four will move forward to make their presentation to the AEDC Board of Directors. On Monday, March 30 the finalists will learn if their hard work will pay off by securing them a $30,000 grant being offer by the AEDC.

Was This Winter’s Weather Different? Yes, But Not In January.

The message coming out of Trinity Valley Electric Cooperative regarding customer outrage over high bills for January (February billing) has been consistent: Bills went up because customer usage went up due to the weather.

Many customers saw huge jumps in their electric bills for service from December to January — some as much as double or more — prompting a grassroots effort to demand answers in a Facebook group called “Fight Against TVEC.” 

So was there something different about the weather this year? According to temperature records from the U.S. Weather Data website, yes … but it was not January.

It was December.

According to the records (I used Athens as my location), December 2014 was by far the mildest December in a decade.

December 2014 saw just three days where the temps hit freezing or below.
