Clayton Homes to bring 240 jobs to Athens

Manufacturing jobs are coming to Athens.

Clayton Homes has purchased an empty 155,000 square-foot building on State Highway 31 West for building manufactured homes, according to Athens Economic Development Executive Director Lisa Denton.

Denton said Clayton Homes intends to invest nearly $6.5 million in the location, including plans for an additional 40,000 square feet, and will build top of the line double-wides there.

When Athens resident Matt Cleaver first saw his brother’s invention, he laughed out loud.

“When he showed it to me I instantly knew that he had a great idea on his hands,” said Cleaver.

His brother Drew came up with a new design for the traditional clothes hanger while trying to create more space in his college dorm room. By lowering the hook, the hangers raise up and create more space underneath the clothes. In an average master bedroom closet, this creates eleven cubic feet of new space, enough room to fit forty-eight shoeboxes.
