Athens High School senior Corinne Earnest signed with Texas A&M Commerce Tuesday to play soccer. She is seated between parents Renda and Jeff Garner and siblings Camden and Cobee. Standing are grandmother Karen Richardson, sister Callie Earnest and Coach Mark Hall. Cori is continuing in her mother’s footsteps, as Renda Garner played on the first women’s soccer team at A&M-Commerce Lions from 1995 to 1996. “Cori brings not only her skill and determination but considerable character to the team,” said Hall. City of Athens to make old hospital bricks available

The City of Athens will make bricks from the old Henderson County Memorial Hospital available to the public this week.

One commemorative brick per person will be given away, free of charge, on Friday from 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. and Saturday from 8:30 a.m – 3:30 p.m. at the City of Athens Community Collection Site – located at 500 Aaron St. (just past the railroad tracks). Glass recycling and other services will be available both days as well.

ACPA schedules annual Father-Daughter Ball

Athens Christian Preparatory’s annual Father-Daughter Ball is scheduled for Feb. 27, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Cain Center. This is the 8th year for this event hosted by the school for Athens and the surrounding communities.

“We began this project in 2009 because we wanted to do something for the community. We liked the idea of celebrating the special relationship between fathers and daughters. The event has grown every year with 2015 being our largest crowd yet,” said Teresa DeMay, Head of School for ACPA.

AHS powerlifters take first in Fairfield

The Athens High School boys powerlifting team competed in a district meet in Fairfield on Feb. 4 and brought home the first-place trophy. They have also placed first at an invitational meet in Malakoff.   • In the 123-pound class, Omar Hernandez was second, Manuel Vazquez third and Daniel Vazquez sixth.
  • In the 148-pound class, Joseph Mahmoud was first.
  • In the 181-pound class, Maalik Hall was first.
  • In the 198-pound class, Logan Fuller was first and Antonio Miranda was fifth.
  • In the 242-pound class, Noah Bush was first, and Alfredo Miranda was second.
  • In the 275-pound class, Chad Walker was first.
  • In the super heavyweight class, Josh West was first.
