Bernardo Braga Da Cruz recently returned to Athens High School where he spent the 2001-2002 school year as an exchange student from Portugal. Cruz was a member of the AHS soccer team, which in 2002 was co-district champion and bi-district champion. He returned to Athens in October with his wife, Joana, to attend the wedding reception of his host-family brother, Austin Cates. The two played soccer together and — when Cruz’s original host family announced they were moving from Athens — the Cates family happily took Cruz in. (Toni Garrard Clay/AISD)
ATHENS — The Athens Hornets opened up district play Friday night with an impressive 62-24 win over the Life Waxahachie Mustangs. The Hornets exploded in the second quarter to stretch a 13-10 lead to 41-16 at the half.
Athens improves to 3-2, 1-0 with the win.

The City of Athens is inviting its development community over for a chat. On Oct. 18, the City will host a Development Roundtable from 3-5 p.m. at The Texan to discuss development issues and receive feedback from the building and development community on how the City can better serve them and the community.

The City of Athens reduced the building permit fees charged by the City, effective October 1, 2018.
“The current fees we have used were raised in 2017 when the City had to utilize a third-party inspection service.” said Interim Director of Development Services Ryan Adams. “Those fees were set to ensure we would cover the cost of that service. Since we now provide inspections in-house by a City of Athens employee, the Council felt the timing was right to review our fee structure”.
