Athens resident raises $66,000-plus in Kickstarter campaign

When Athens resident Matt Cleaver first saw his brother’s invention, he laughed out loud.
“When he showed it to me I instantly knew that he had a great idea on his hands,” said Cleaver.
His brother Drew came up with a new design for the traditional clothes hanger while trying to create more space in his college dorm room. By lowering the hook, the hangers raise up and create more space underneath the clothes. In an average master bedroom closet, this creates eleven cubic feet of new space, enough room to fit forty-eight shoeboxes.

AISD, City Council discuss closing a portion of Dul Averiett
Monday night, Athens Independent School District officials and Athens City Council members debated closing Dul Averiett between Owen and Royall streets.
Superintendent Blake Stiles said the district was asking for the street to be closed for safety reasons and to help with the refurbishing of Bruce Field.
“Dul Averiett is a highway right in the middle of a school zone, and we have kids that walk across that street all day long from class to class,” AISD Superintendent Blake Stiles said. “And at night time, if you have ball games or events, it’s a circus.”

Athens City Council discusses old hospital property
As demolition of the old Henderson County Memorial Hospital on Lindsey Lane in Athens nears completion, the question becomes: What to do with the property?
That is up to the Athens City Council, because ownership of the land was transferred to the City in September 2015 to expedite demolition of the building.
Up until this week, suggestions centered around creating some sort of park. That changed Monday night, however, when the City Council began discussing the “highest and best use” of the property.

AHS girls powerlifting sends one to state and an alternate
The Athens girls powerlifting team competed in the regional championship Saturday in Fairfield, qualifying six girls in six different weight classes, including one for the state meet and another as alternate. The team placed seventh out of 27.
