The 6th Annual Eggfest was held Saturday at the Texas Freshwater Fishery Center, with folks cooking on Big Green Eggs and plenty of food to taste.

“Everybody out here is cooking for the love of the Egg. There are no prizes, there are no checks at the end of the day,” said Chris Randall from Paragon Distributing. “Most of these dishes coming off of these Eggs would be served at some of the finest restaurants in Dallas, Fort Worth, wherever you want to be.”

Randall said he would place the Athens Eggfest as one of the top five in the nation for attendance, which is great news for the TFFC because the $5 entry tasting fee is donated to the Fishery Center.

“So they can keep doing the things they have to do to help Texas fishing,” Randall said.

Athens High School students Drake Rummel and Justin Gatlin like to duck hunt … a lot. And it was on one of those hunts that an idea came to them for a shop project they could enter into the Henderson County Livestock Show: a duck blind. Once it was mentioned, they knew it was a perfect fit.

They started by simply searching the internet for a duck blind they liked and used it as a starting point. “We drew out the plans by hand and figured how much metal we’d need for every square inch and what type of metal we’d need,” said Rummel.
