The Athens City Council discussed the 2017 proposed budget and tax rate at its meeting Monday night. The proposed tax rate would increase .04 cents, but will include some safety upgrades for the city. Here is a video update I did after the meeting. — Michael

The City of Athens to assume control of the Cain Center in 2017, with plans to renovate the facility for public recreation and City operations.

The City of Athens and the Board of Cain Center, Inc. have agreed to a new plan for the Cain Center.
In a motion approved by the Cain Center board on Friday, Aug. 5, the Cain Center will close its doors temporarily on Dec. 31, 2016, in anticipation of the City assuming control of the facility in January. After the first of the year, the City plans to begin a major reconstruction project, providing much needed capital improvements to the facility.
Cain Center Board Chairman Cliff Bomer said, “The proposal by the City to take over the Cain Center makes a lot of sense. The Cain Center board feels this decision is in the best interest of the center and will benefit both the citizens and City on a long term basis.”

Athens ISD’s annual Back-to-School Bash is Aug. 13, 9 a.m – 11 a.m. at South Athens Elementary. The free event is open to all students, pre-K through 12, and their families. In addition to 20 organizations on hand to offer information and resources, students will have the opportunity to enjoy inflatable obstacle courses and slides. Many door prizes will be given away, including movie passes and a variety of restaurant gift cards, as well as hot dogs, chips, drinks and snow cones — all thanks to generous event sponsors. Local churches will be giving away pants, polo shirts and t-shirts. In addition, those students who pre-qualified through the HELP Center will receive free backpacks.
