AMWA, Peace Officers Association breaks ground on new headquarters facility

The rain could not dampen the smiles and enthusiasm of the Athens Municipal Water Authority Board of Directors and the Henderson County Peace Officers Association (HCPOA) President on Wednesday as they ceremoniously broke ground on their new shared headquarters facility.

Authority Board President Mike Peek, Board members Milburn Chaney and Frank Lunceford, were joined by Authority Executive Director Bill Casey and HCPOA President David Faught to mark the occasion.

The 4,000 square-foot, shared-space will stand on the Authority’s property where the HCPOA building stood until earlier this year. The new headquarters facility is estimated to open in November.

Athens ISD meets STAAR standard

Once again, all campuses at Athens ISD have “met standard,” as determined by the preliminary results from the 2016 Texas Education Agency accountability ratings — also known as STAAR.

“I”m pleased with these results and anxious to see how many distinctions we receive in September (when more detailed official results are released). I expect we’ll do well,” said AISD Superintendent Blake Stiles.

City of Athens considers FY 2017 budget; .04 cent tax increase

The Athens City Council was updated on the Fiscal Year 2017 Proposed Budget Monday night and scheduled public hearings for both the budget and the proposed tax rate.

The public hearings will be 5:30 p.m. Aug. 22 and Aug. 29 at the Athens Partnership Center, 201 W. Corsicana Street.

Mayor Jerry Don Vaught said he was very happy with the way the proposed budget turned out.

“This year’s budget is incredible,” he said. “I truly have not seen a better budget.”

Deadline for Leadership Athens this Friday

It’s time for Leadership Athens 2016-2017. Deadline for all applications this Friday, Aug. 12.

The Leadership Athens (Formally known as Athens Leadership Institute or “ALI”) has been opening the minds and hearts of many in this community for 30 years. The many opportunities of leadership enrichment started with the first session in 1983 graduating in 1984.

Leadership Athens is a program of the Athens Chamber of Commerce that endeavors to train both existing and emerging leaders in the knowledge and skills to help them make a real difference in the Athens Community.
