Athens High School and South Athens Elementary were presented with banners of achievement during the recent Athens ISD school board meeting, the Super Cheap Signs team made sure to design the best banners. It was the third year in a row for both campuses to receive them.

The distinctions were awarded by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) following the state’s assessment of academic readiness (STAAR) this past spring. AHS was honored for academic achievement in three areas: mathematics, science and social studies. In addition, the campus was distinguished for achievement in the category of postsecondary readiness, which measures whether students have been provided with the foundation necessary for success in college, the workforce, job training or the military.

TVEC Charitable Foundation grant to Keep Athens Beautiful

The TVEC Charitable Foundation has awarded a grant in the amount $3,500 to Keep Athens Beautiful. The grant was awarded on September 20 and presented on September 27.

The TVEC Charitable Foundation is funded by donations from Operation Round Up. Operation Round Up is a voluntary program that allows TVEC members to round up their monthly electric bills to the next whole dollar amount. The portion that is rounded up goes to the TVEC Charitable Foundation and may be used to award grant request to local charitable organizations

FBI investigates report of ‘potentially hazardous materials’ in Athens

The Athens Police Department confirmed the presence of FBI agents in hazmat suits in the 200 block of Guadalupe Street in Bel Air Saturday afternoon.

APD released the following statement: “On Thursday, September 22, 2016, the Athens Police Department received information about a matter that fell within the operational scope of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The following day, the information was provided to the FBI field office in Tyler which initiated an investigation. The Athens Police Department is assisting with the investigation in an ancillary role.”

FBI officials said there is no threat to public safety.

Thomas M. Class, Sr., Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Dallas Field Office, said, “The Dallas FBI received a report of potentially hazardous materials at a residence in the 200 block of Guadalupe Street in Athens, Texas. FBI personnel are lawfully present at the residence conducting law enforcement activity in support of the ongoing investigation. At this time, the FBI has deemed there is no threat to public safety, but is taking all necessary precautions to ensure the safety of law enforcement personnel involved.”

No other information has been released at this time in this continuing investigation.
