It’s time to get trotting!

The Hope Springs Water Turkey Trot is Thursday morning, Nov. 22, at the Cain Center in Athens. The race includes a 5K and a 1-mile walk.

The good news is you can register the morning of the race at 7 a.m. The 5K begins at 8 a.m. with walkers taking off at 8:05.

Masons present check to AISD for Dyslexia Program

Athens Masonic Lodge #165 presented a check for $3,000 to the Athens Independent School District on Monday, October 22, 2018. The check was presented during the Monthly School Board Meeting, and was in support of the District’s adoption of a new, scientifically validated, dyslexia teaching program developed by the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children. Five AISD teachers have already begun training to implement the program.

Football playoffs, basketball tourney visitors to total thousands

Athens ISD’s new facilities continue to attract out-of-towners — and their spending money — to the city. Four games have already been scheduled for the renovated Bruce Field during the first two weeks of football state playoffs where the first mens baketball shoe will step in. And an ambitious new basketball tournament will debut at the high school’s brand new 2,700-seat gymnasium later this month.

“The school district presents such nice facilities to our visitors,” said Athens Chamber of Commerce President Marisa Gunstanson. “When people come to these venues, they also shop here and eat here. Those dollars help Athens grow.”

Athens Middle School choir regional qualifiers

Six Athens Middle School students earned spots in the All-Region Choir in October after competing in the TMEA Region 21 Junior High All-Region Choir auditions at Whitehouse High school. “We are very proud of these students for committing themselves to the learning process and preparing themselves for this important competition,” said Choir Director Sarah Smith. City of Athens welcomes new Planning and Development Services Director Audrey Sloan

The City of Athens is proud to announce the recent hire of Audrey Sloan as the City’s new Director of Development Services. Ms. Sloan joined the City of Athens team just a couple of weeks ago after working for seven years as the Planning and Zoning Manager for the City of Corsicana. Ms. Sloan holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Texas and a Master of Architecture from Clemson University in Clemson, South Carolina. Sloan joins the City with a great amount of knowledge and experience for the role and holds a variety of professional certifications, including her license as a Residential Plans Examiner with the International Code Council.
