Athens City Council approves Gallagher Construction for Cain Center renovations

The Athens City Council met in Special Session on Friday, September 29, 2017 to discuss and consider all matters related to entering into an agreement with Gallagher Construction Company, LP for Construction Management Services of the highly anticipated renovation of the Cain Center. In 2016, Gallagher Construction was selected by the Athens Independent School District (AISD) Board of Trustees to be the construction manager on the 59.9 million dollar bond issued for the construction and redevelopment of Athens schools. They wanted to upgrade the schools with new faclities and were looking for a reliable commercial building service similar to what’s offered by Collins Commercial Construction Cairns in Australia.

Athens native and legend Vivian Castleberry dies at 95

Vivian Anderson Castleberry, one of Athens’ brightest daughters, passed away on Wednesday, October 4, 2017, at the age of 95. She led what she herself called “an extraordinary life.” Castleberry was a trailblazing Dallas journalist, author, social justice activist, champion of women, friend to both the powerful and downtrodden, and devoted wife and mother.

She was born Vivian Lou Anderson in 1922 in Lindale, Texas. In 1932, her parents packed up and moved their three children and six jersey cows to a small farm about a mile from the current Athens High School. She called that move the best thing that ever happened to her. Athens schools were excellent, she said, and the teachers “remarkably fine.”

Congratulations, Athens ISD

Athens High School and South Athens Elementary recently received banners of achievement celebrating both campuses’ performance on the Texas Education Agency’s accountability ratings. At the high school, distinctions were designated in academic achievement in mathematics, academic achievement in science, academic achievement in social studies, top 25 percent student progress, and postsecondary readiness. At South Athens, distinctions were designated in academic achievement in ELA/reading, academic achievement in mathematics, top 25 percent student progress, top 25 percent closing performance gaps, and postsecondary readiness. Athens ISD “met standard” at every campus and as whole. “This is a win,” said Superintendent Blake Stiles. “I’m a competitive person, and I want to see even more distinctions in our future.” (Courtesy photos)
