Car seat check event scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 14

By Michael V. Hannigan/HCN

The Streak is up to 17 as of Monday. According to TxDOT, at least one person has died on Texas roads every day since Nov. 7, 2000 … that’s 17 years of carnage.

TxDOT Executive Director James Bass said, “According to this website, 94 percent of these deadly crashes are due to driver error, things like distracted driving, speeding and drunk driving.”

It is dangerous out there — the number of dead during The Streak is nearing 60,000. Despite it making a small dent in your car finance, you need to keep yourself and your passengers safe.

The Henderson County AgriLife Extension office is offering residents a chance to ensure their children’s safety with a Car Seat Checkup scheduled for 1-4 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, in the Athens Walmart parking lot.

Respected Athens ISD teacher discusses success in the classroom

Maureen Bogowitz

By Toni Garrard Clay/AISD Communications Coordinator

Before Maureen Bogowitz became an award-winning educator at Athens ISD, she was a dedicated parent volunteer … as well as stay-at-home mom of two, children’s choir teacher, Sunday school teacher, Girl Scout Troop leader, and holder of a degree in English and comparative literature. “They roped me in through the PTO,” laughed Bogowitz just outside her office door at Athens Middle School. On her wall is the iconic image of John Lennon in a sleeveless New York City t-shirt and shades — not typical “teacher” decor, but somehow perfect for a woman who describes herself as “a dreamer.”

City of Athens upgrades warning system; test scheduled Nov. 1

Press release

Approved by the Athens City Council in April, work is now complete on system-wide improvements to the City’s Emergency Outdoor Warning System. Through the competitive bidding process, the City selected Federal Signal Corporation to update the City’s aged warning system with the objective of providing reliable and effective emergency notification to citizens.

The City’s previous system had four notification stations that were over two decades old. Due to their age, these systems consistently failed or were in need of costly repairs in order to function. Contracted at $173,634, Federal Signal Corporation’s proposal provided a savings to the City of $54,366 by preserving three existing poles and siren mounts, which are in compliance and were first installed in 2011. All other emergency notification stations received new sirens, hardware, poles, and mounts.
