It must be Christmas time in Athens!
Athens Mayor Monte Montgomery said, “Saturday will be an exciting time to be in Athens. Lots of activities around the square including Navy Band Southwest performance and lots of fun for kids. I am very excited for the citizens to be able to enjoy the activities and hope we have the biggest and best parade ever, Saturday evening.”
Light Up Athens will be turning the square into a Christmas celebration this Saturday, Dec. 2, with “Holiday on the Square,” an event that has been entertaining children and adults since 2012.
This year’s schedule includes:
1-5 p.m. — Holiday Market
1-5 p.m. — Activites for Children: arts and crafts, face painting, balloon artist
3:30 – 5 p.m. — Band of the West
Dusk — Christmas tree lighting ceremony
Keep Athens Beautiful Executive Director Carol Morton, who is one of the organizers of the event, said, there will be 35 vendors for the Holiday Market.
“It is going to be a great, wonderful family day on the square,” she said.

A new medical clinic in Athens is offering some hope to those currently left on the outside of the healthcare system.
Family Circle of Care opened a new clinic at 1001 N. Palestine Street in April. Family Circle of Care is a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), which means it qualifies for federal funds to help with healthcare costs.
“We have the ability to get reimbursement from the federal government for seeing people that qualify,” said Site Manager Bradley Nelson.

Sometimes the same old news is very good news. And in this case, the story being repeated is that Athens ISD has received very high marks for its financial well-being.
During Monday night’s November school board meeting, Chief Financial Officer Randy Jones reported to the district’s trustees that AISD has again been designated as “superior” by the Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas. The current 2016-17 ratings are based on school year 2015-16 data. On a 100-point scale, the district received a 98.

When the City of Athens found the sewer leak near Coon Creek on Nov. 20, it was dumping an estimated 200,000 gallons of residential and light commercial sewage a day, it was so bad that an environmental law attorney was already getting involved in the problem. City staff were able to get the leak under control quickly and contact the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ)
The problem the leak highlighted, however, won’t be as easy to fix.
“While unpleasant and definitely unwanted, these types of leaks are not uncommon in cities,” Managing Director of Public Services Ryan Adams said about the leak. “Aging infrastructure, invasive roots, shifting grounds, and other circumstances will stress the system to the point where leaks will occur. Our best defense is to keep a watchful eye on the condition of our infrastructure through preventative maintenance and replacement.”
