Congratulations to Jody Jackson, the 2013 Joe B. Fulgham Agriculturist of the Year. The following is the text of the speech given when he was introduced:

Agriculturist of the Year Presentation

The 2013 Joe B. Fulgham Agriculturist of the Year is a graduate of Athens High School. His lifelong ambition has been to farm, raise cattle, and enjoy that way of life. He started with a few cattle and a poultry laying operation selling eggs. He now runs a commercial cow/calf operation raising quality Brangus replacement heifers for sale to other ranchers, a feed steer operation growing out approximately 150 steers a year, custom tractor work, baling hay and planting sprigs. That is what you call a full-time farmer.

Our award winner has been active in Henderson County by serving as a trustee for the Murchison School District, Continue reading “Jody Jackson: 2013 Agriculturist of the Year”

I could write a story from Keep Athens Beautiful’s 25th Anniversary Celebration Saturday night, but I could never do as well as Darwin Winfield did with his speech … so I’ll let Darwin have the stage one more time … and don’t forget to check out the KAB award winners here. — Michael

Darwin Winfield’s speech at the KAB 25th Anniversary Saturday, May 18 Friday, May 17

Like so many of the things that make this world great, Keep Athens Beautiful started with a great idea and a few really dedicated people.

The result of their vision: a town that is cleaner and prettier where children are taught to recycle and trees are planted every year.

Recently, Carol and Jennifer sat down with the beautiful Margaret Myers, who was an integral part of KAB’s beginning. They also spent time talking to Felecia Cain, the first executive director. They even asked me a few questions. I really had to dig into the upstairs archives to find the answers, but I think I got most of it right.

At this time, I would like to introduce Margaret and Felecia. Will the two of you please stand? Thank you so Continue reading “KAB celebrates 25 years”

Three stops scheduled for Farm & Ranch Tour

The 50th Annual Henderson County Farm & Ranch Tour will be taking off from the Fairpark Complex tomorrow at 9 a.m. … and there are three great stops planned (read about the speakers here):

J1 Ranch

J1 Ranch is a cattle operation begun by Ben and Patsy Johnson in the 1960s. It began by purchasing land in western Henderson County. This land was sold in the early 1980s to purchase the current location, which consists of 1,400 acres in southern Henderson County. J1 Ranch is a family run business with Patsy and Chris, her son, making management decisions.

The livestock include grass finished yearlings and a cow-calf enterprise. The current cow herd is close to 300 pairs with approximately 50 heifers retained as replacements every year. Calves are born in the spring and weaned in the fall. They are retained, finished on grass, and sold at 22 to 28 months of age weighing about 1,100 pounds.
