MED-LOGICS — a medical device manufacturer which started in California in 1992 — broke ground on its new facility in Athens Wednesday, June 19.

NEW HOME FOR MED-LOGICS

  • MED-LOGICS is a manufacturer of state-of-the-art medical devices used in Lasik, Dsaek, and Cataract surgeries.
  • The Athens facility will become the new corporate and manufacturing home for MED-LOGICS.
  • The company will be moving from its location in Laguna Hills, Calif. and will employ 20 people initially and will make over $1 million investment in the new Athens facility.
  • MED-LOGICS plans to be operational this November.
  • The company will build its facility on a four-acre site in the Athens Industrial Park.
  • Construction is under the direction of Montgomery Unlimited.

QUOTABLES

Athens EDC Board Member David Holdredge: “We are very pleased that you are coming. We hope that you will be a big part of our business community, and we certainly welcome you and your California employees as citizens of Athens.”

MED-LOGICS CEO Rod Ross: “We truly appreciate all of your hospitality and we do feel welcome. We do want to contribute in a variety of ways, and one of the ways that I hope I can help is to help bring more medical device companies here to Athens. Because the more medical device companies you can bring here the more that will come, and the more vendors, suppliers, molders, tubing extractors, machine shops … all of that will follow. That’s the way it has always happened.”

Med-Logics to build new facility in Athens

AEDC press release

The Athens Economic Development Corporation (AEDC) Board of Directors and Athens Mayor Jerry Vaught are excited to announce with Med-Logics, Inc. the location of a new facility in Athens. Med-Logics, Inc., is a manufacturer of state-of-the-art medical devices used in Lasik, Dsaek, and Cataract surgeries.

Med-Logics plans a ground breaking ceremony to be held on Wednesday, June 19, at 9 a.m. The Athens facility will become Med-Logics new corporate and manufacturing home for the company. Med-Logics will be moving from its location in Laguna Hills, Calif. and will employ 20 people initially and will make over $1 million investment in the new Athens facility. Med-Logics plans to be operational this November. They will build their facility on a four-acre site in the Athens Industrial Park.

Med-Logics chose Athens over other communities because of the low tax burden in Texas, Athens’ existing ancillary medical device industry, workforce and location.

According to AEDC president Brian J. Malone, “Med-Logics is a great fit for Athens” and “We were able to show Med-Logics that it made great business sense to be here in Athens.

Save the date for Nonprofit Resource Connection

Heart

By Michael V. Hannigan

It may be a few months away, but I have a date for you to save: Saturday, Sept. 21.

That’s when the “Nonprofit Resource Connection” is scheduled. Now the name may not ring any bells because it has been changed, but this will actually be the second year for the event.

The idea is to bring the county’s nonprofit groups together in one place so that potential volunteers can visit with the different agencies and learn where they can plug in and help.

The event is scheduled for the Cain Center and organizers are working on the details, but it looks like this year Continue reading “Save the date for Nonprofit Resource Connection”

No drama in Athens for this year’s decorations request

nativity

(UPDATE: When I wrote this, I did not know Gov. Perry was going to sign the “Merry Christmas” bill today. While timely for this post, the bill is specifically aimed at school districts and is unlikely to have any impact on the county nativity scene.)

Sometimes, it is the thing that doesn’t happen that is the most interesting.

Commissioners’ Court this week approved an application from Keep Athens Beautiful and Light Up Athens to decorate the Courthouse Square for a variety of occasions between now and the end of the year. The request includes details about decorating for Christmas and also includes the annual nativity scene.

The application was OK’d as a matter of routine and with almost no discussion. It was pretty much a non-event.

The only reason it is worth mentioning is because of the group that was missing … the group that over the past two years has become a part of Christmas in Athens: The Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF).

For those who need a refresher, the FFRF is the Wisconsin-based atheist organization that in 2011 demanded the county
