The donation is for glow necklaces to be sold to support the Hornets in their blacklight pep rally. It was a huge success for the newly formed club’s first event. Grant Program Targets West Athens Corridor
(Editor’s Note: This story was originally published in Fly The Flag. It is reprinted by permission.)

It is generally agreed that Athens is among the prettiest cities in East Texas, with its oak trees, rollings hills, ponds and nearby Lake Athens. There is, however, a visual weak spot on the west side of town, from the area where state highways 31 and 175 split (known to locals as “the Y”) toward the downtown square on Corsicana Street.
“The AEDC board is aware there’s an appearance problem along that corridor,” said Athens Economic Development Corporation President and CEO Brian Malone. “Whenever business prospects come into town, if they fly into DFW and then drive into town on 1 75, the first part of Athens they see is that corridor, and it does not make for a good first impression.”

HCPAC YES! Classes About to Begin
It’s time to think about YES! Classes for the Fall with Henderson County Performing Arts Center. We had such fun last year and we’re looking forward to doing even more this year. We will be able to go into more depth with Acting, Stage Make-Up, Set Design, Costume Design, Playwriting and Stage Craft including lighting, set design and construction and props. We will also do some Stage Movement and Stage Combat.
There is so much we have in store for the kids so we want to make sure everyone attends who wants to be there. We have room for only twelve students in the YES! Program this year so, please, reserve your child’s spot soon! The age range for YES! students is 9 – 13 years. There are a few scholarships available. Just ask about them.
After you have had a chance to let the dust settle from the beginning of the regular school year the YES! Classes will begin. The scheduled day is Thursdays from 4:30 to 5:30pm. The starting date is September 18. Each class will be an hour and will be held in the Black Box Theatre.
Call HCPAC at 903.675.3908 to get all set for YES!

The process to ban the hazardous material began just a week after a May 29 fire at an Athens ammonium nitrate storage facility caused officials to set up an evacuation zone in approximately a five block radius. Continue reading “Process to Ban Fertilizer Plants in Athens Continues”
