The Athens ISD Board of Trustees voted unanimously Monday night to change the name of Athens Intermediate School to Central Athens Elementary, effective the beginning of next school year. The change is part of the planned elementary campus realignment, which was announced in August for the 2015-2016 school year.

Bel Air and South Athens elementaries have reached capacity, while Athens Intermediate — which currently houses fourth- and fifth-grade — has room to grow. “The invention of the hamburger is part of Athens’ history and the Uncle Fletch Hamburger Festival is a time to celebrate Athens as the birthplace of the first hamburger,” Mayor Jerry Don Vaught said. “I couldn’t be more pleased with the success of the return of the hamburger festival to Athens.”

The downtown streets were filled with people who turned out for the celebration and participated in the fun activities that were planned for the day.
