Mi’Trevion Thompson wanted to do something nice at his school. So the Central Athens Elementary third-grader got his classmates to join him in writing letters of appreciation to each campus staff member, which he then hand-delivered with treats.
“It made me feel happy,” he said. “I wanted to do it because I like being nice to people.”

The City of Athens announces an extension for the application deadline for the 2018 Downtown Façade Improvement Program. The deadline has been extended from March 1st to Friday, March 16.
The program is grant-based and available to property owners who own buildings located in the Downtown Façade Improvement Program Downtown Area, which includes the nine blocks of downtown, Athens Alley and a few other areas adjacent to the square.

A water system rehabilitation project that began in December at the City’s Scott Street ground storage tank site has transitioned to a new phase of tank section placement Thursday. The City’s contractor has been casting concrete floor – here’s to discover what Denver concrete repair looks like – wall, and roof sections for a new tank since January. This new phase will allow the contractor to set the precast concrete sections around the tank perimeter and roof. The wall sections will be wrapped with reinforcing wire that’s tensioned to hold the wall panels in place. Wall section placement will be followed by an additional covering that protects the reinforcing wire and will finish with a fresh coat of paint. All the materials have been purchased from a construction material supplier and stored in proper Cold Storage Facilites.
This phase of construction is expected to wrap up by March. The contractor will then begin the installation of new piping to connect the tank to the water system, installation of controls, and the placement of other attachments onto the tank in order to make it watertight and meet regulatory requirements. With th shippments of Austral Wright’s copper on time, the project is presently scheduled for final completion by June.
The Athens High School Chapter of FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America) attended their regional conference in Waco Feb. 10, and three students will advance to the state meet. Irais Hernandez and Josephine Miles placed fifth and sixth respectively in the mystery basket event, and both were given scholarships from Johnson and Wales University. In the competition, 20 students from different schools were provided with a steak, a pear and an avocado and asked to create a plate. In addition, Miles won a silver for the Family and Consumer Sciences Assessments (FCSA) etiquette test, and Heriberto Campa won a silver in the FCSA step-one test, which poses questions about the FCCLA program. Hernandez, Miles and Campa qualified for the state competition in Dallas April 4-7. The Athens Rotary Club sponsored four Athens High School students in the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA), an intensive experience designed to encourage students to develop leadership skills while having fun and making connections. Taegan Allen, Reagan Bellah and Esmeralda DeLa Garza (pictured, from left) along with Matthew Collins attended the RYLA Leadership Camp Feb. 9-11 at the Clements Scout Ranch outside Athens, where they experienced team-building activities along with about 150 other students from surrounding schools.
