AHS rocks it at TSA state

AHS claims UIL academic success

Sixteen Athens High School students qualified for the UIL Academic Regional Meet held April 13. Athens High School has another trophy to put in the display case after enjoying success this year in UIL academic competition.

The school hosted the UIL District 18-4A Academic Meet on March 21 and finished as District Runners-Up with 16 students qualifying for regionals. The speech and math teams were standouts with first-place finishes, and the journalism, literary criticism and social studies teams each took second.

Athens native excels in math, science and music

Yuvia Leon describes herself as “a STEM sort of person.” For those of you not in the know, that’s education shorthand for science, technology, engineering and math. And this Athens High School junior absolutely rocks it.

She co-leads the science club she helped start a year ago with friend and fellow STEM standout Ale Pedroza, a sophomore. “I joined because I thought it would be fun to do experiments,” said Yuvia. “Now Ale and I come up with the experiments. We’ve gone from participating to teaching, and in the teaching, I find I’m learning more.”

AMS treble choir wins Sweepstakes

The Athens Middle School Treble Choir won the much-heralded Sweepstakes Award by earning perfect scores at the Middle School UIL Concert and Sight Reading Competition in Carthage on April 5. The students received all perfect scores on both portions of the event. “These ladies have been working and perfecting three pieces of music since January and have been practicing their sight reading skills in class every day since the beginning of the year,” said AMS Choir Director Sarah Smith. AEDC announces second call for Business Assistance Grant applications

AEDC’s Business Assistance Grant program encourages exterior improvements to properties located within the designated beautification area, along the western and northern corridors of Athens. Businesses must apply by May 4 to be considered for 2018 funding.

Athens Economic Development Corporation is announcing a second call for Business Assistance Grant applications due to grant funding that remains available following approval of the first round of eligible projects.

AEDC has awarded nearly $90,000 in matching grant funds to businesses located along the western corridor of Athens, since the Business Assistance Grant program’s inception in 2014. AEDC Board of Directors has approved new additions to this year’s program. Furthermore, first-time applicants will have an opportunity to receive a higher percentage of matching funds.
