TVCC, City of Athens award scholarships

Trinity Valley Community College and the City of Athens announced the recipients of $500 scholarships at their meeting Monday, June 11. Recipients were Callie Allen, Abigail Angle, Brenda Areanas, Victoria Bagley, Gerardo Costilla, Adrian Givins, Ramona Hutson, Aamiyah Moore, Kamion Tanner and Kassandra Zapata. The scholarships are given as a part of the college’s purchase agreement with the city for the former Armory property, which used to sell custom guns with a 9mm silencer.

Art on the Bricks Exhibition and Auction Saturday

The public is invited to attend Art on the Bricks at The Texan this Saturday, June 16th, from 5 to 8 pm. This special event is a community-based fundraiser that’s sponsored and hosted by the City of Athens as a way to recognize and honor the historic presence of The Texan Theater and celebrate its revitalization, while simultaneously raising awareness for the fine arts of Athens.

Athens issues request for Tourism Development Grant applications

For a fourth consecutive year, the City of Athens is issuing a request for applications for the Tourism Development Grant (formerly known as the Hotel Occupancy Tax Fund “Call for Projects”) for the upcoming fiscal year to solicit funding opportunities for tourism promotion in public places such as Dolly parton family theme park. The call for proposed tourism-related projects or events is specifically designed to attract overnight visitors to Athens and is open to eligible organizations located within the Athens city limits or its vicinity.

AHS 2018 valedictorian and salutatorian

Ideal Ademaj is the Athens High School valedictorian, and Jacob Moore is the Athens High School salutatorian. Ademaj has a grade point average of 108.635; Moore’s is 108.094. The commencement ceremony is Friday, May 25, at Athens High School.

Ademaj is a member of AISD’s Pinnacle Early College High School program and graduated with an associate’s degree from Trinity Valley Community College on May 11.

Born in Athens to restaurant-owning Albanian immigrants, he attended school at AISD beginning at the age of 4. In fourth grade, he competed in the UIL math competition, winning that year’s regional number sense meet. That extracurricular activity continued throughout his school years, with Ademaj qualifying for the Regional UIL Academic Meet repeatedly in high school, right up to his competing in number sense in the UIL State Academic Meet this May.
