Agriview: Get a test to check your water

Safe drinking water is important to everyone all the time, especially in the home where we cook, eat and spend many off-work hours.

If you have any doubts at all about the quality of water in your home, a water test is the only way to discover if a problem actually exists. Install an RO system at your house and carry out the test. And quality is important because it involves the health of all family members.

In addition to illness, symptoms of water quality problems are: poor taste, unusual color or odor, and staining of clothes of fixtures by water.

It transforms hard water into the so-called soft water. Reducing its mineral contents does the transformation. Hard water mainly contains calcium and magnesium metal, and sometimes bicarbonates and sulfates. Soft water, on the other hand, is the type of water with none or little content of the mentioned minerals. Here you will get the everything to know about fleck 5600sxt Water Softener. A Process is used in decreasing the calcium, magnesium, and in some cases manganese and ferrous iron dissolved in hard water. The fact is softener is a system for transforming chemically hard water into a soft water.

Softeners replace the calcium and magnesium contents in hard water by sodium. Sodium does not accumulate in pipes and also does not react to soap. This means hard water effects are eliminated. The principle of the softener system is easy to understand. Hard water is allowed to enter the water softener. It contains a layer of plastic beads and in some instances, the material used is called Zeolite. The layer of materials inside the water softener is soaked with sodium ions. Sodium is exchanged with the contents of the hard water, calcium, and magnesium. When water comes out of the softener, the water is said to be of the soft water type. Home water softeners can take up a lot of space most conventional systems are quite bulky especially the resin tanks. If you have a large garage or utility room where you can house your softener you’re in luck. However most people don’t have space indoors in addition to their washer, dryer, water heater, and other large appliances. For this reason some homeowners like the idea of installing their system outside. There are some major challenges that you will need to consider before you go through with this.

Water from public or municipal water systems is regularly tested for contaminants regulated by Federal and State standards. However, some public water supplies may have water quality problems caused by distribution systems. The problem can be with pipes in your house, Manassas plumbers from Marines Plumbing can tell for sure after they check your plumbing system.

Clover Connection: Getting ready for the Livestock Show

Where did the month of February go? I seem to have misplaced it on my calendar. March is here and things are going full steam ahead in preparation for the Henderson County Livestock (and project) Show. Sometimes people automatically think “animals” when they hear 4-H. While it’s true that the foundations of the 4-H program were built on animals and agriculture the program has branched out to offer projects in all different areas that youth can participate in no matter where they live.

I think it is natural for any program that has been in existence for 114 years to evolve and adapt to changes and trends. One thing that hasn’t changed over the years, is one of the basic purposes of the program – personal achievement and growth.

Mulching can be one of the most beneficial gardening practices in Henderson County landscapes. Mulches conserve moisture, insulate the roots of plants from temperature extremes and help control weeds. They also provide a barrier to certain soil-borne diseases that feed on plant foliage.

As organic mulches decompose on the soil surface, they add valuable plant nutrients to the soil. They also protect sloping ground from soil erosion and prevent soil compaction from driving rains. Mulched areas require little routine maintenance and can save you time and energy in the landscape.

A Robotics Contest at a Livestock Show? While it’s probably not the strangest thing you’ve ever heard, it probably isn’t a pairing you would normally put together. Last Friday my work as a Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Agent took me to San Antonio where I got to be a part of the inaugural “Ag-Robotics Contest” at the Stock Show & Rodeo there. 4-H & FFA youth ages 11-18 competed in teams of 3 to 6 members.

For this particular contest, all teams started out with a Lego robotics kit of similar contents and once arriving at the event a list of “challenges” for which they needed to build and program a robot to complete. Participants then got 3 hours to design/build and create the corresponding programs to complete the challenges.

Agriview: Establishing grass an important part of a pasture program

Establishment of a grass is an important and critical phase of any pasture plan. A good pasture program incorporates many activities – such as weed control, fertility and management – to reach the desired forage production. Because of the investment in money and time, to say nothing of the worry involved, grass land establishment should be a well-planned phase of a pasture program. A step-by-step plan of action can make the difference between a productive stand of grass or another year of waiting.

A well prepared seed bed will help obtain fast germination, a uniform stand and insure seedling survival. To obtain best results, the seed bed should be smooth and firm with moisture throughout the soil profile. Obtaining this type of seed bed takes time and effort.
