Henderson County Commissioner’s Court extended the current burn ban 14 days Tuesday morning. Commissioners are expected to review the ban again during their meeting on Oct. 20.
Fire Marshal Shane Renberg told commissioners the county’s current average Keetch-Byram Drought Index score is 707. The KBDI is a measure of moisture in the soil, and a burn ban is recommended when the KBDI score is above 575.
Renberg said there have been 37 grass fires around the county in the past two weeks, adding that most of them were accidental.
Ignoring the burn ban is a Class C misdemeanor, punishable by a fine up to $500.
