A local favorite is coming back with a new name and a new attitude.
From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 5, Keep Athens Beautiful will be hosting its annual Backyard Farming Home and Garden Show at the Henderson County Fair Park Complex in Athens.
Keep Athens Beautiful added the “Backyard Farming” bit this year to better describe the range of vendors, seminars, programs and activities planned for the event.
The show is a major fundraising project for Keep Athens Beautiful so that the organization can continue to provide programs and beautification projects for the community.
The show is free. There will be a $2 parking donation, which goes to local Boy Scouts.
Like always, the star of the show will be the vendors showing off some of the latest and greatest in home and garden gear. Family Fun
There will be an antique tractor show with a peddle tractor for the kids. Children will also enjoy the jump house plus arts & crafts ($5).
For the older kids in the crowd, Pinot’s Pallett will be on hand for a self-guided painting. ($10)

There will be some information-packed seminars throughout the day, including:
- 9-9:30 a.m. — Chickens 101
- 9:45-10:15 a.m. — Organic Gardening from Athens Organic
- 10:30-11 a.m. — Beekeeping for beginners with Jacob Cole
- 11:15-11:45 a.m. — 5 east steps to a beautiful spring garden by Stephen Gent of McDade’s
- 12-12:30 p.m. — Canning 101
- 12:45-1:15 p.m. — Cattle and Equine Nutrition by Blue Bonnett
- 1:30-2 p.m. — Healthy solid by Tommy Phillips
Master Gardeners
The Henderson County Master Gardeners will be a the show Saturday offering a series a important classes for gardeners, they will also be offering a great landscaping service, you’ll definitely want to try it out. Their schedule includes:
- 10 a.m. — Building a Cheap and Easy Worm Farm: Bill and Marie Hancock, Master Gardeners.
- 11 a.m. — How to Attract Pollinators to Your Garden: Peter Cole, Master Gardener 2016 Intern
- 12 p.m. — Bees 101: Jacob Cole, Ambassador East Texas Beekeepers Association
- 1 p.m. — Medicinal Herbs: Shannon Greene, Master Gardener
- 2 p.m. — Daylily Hybridizing: Doug McKemie, East Texas Daylilies
