Humane Society of CCL Volunteer Recruitment and Get-Together

This event is every third Thursday of the month, and this month is from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Oct. 17 at the Dairy Queen of Seven Points.

This get-together is for both current volunteers and those wanting to learn more about volunteering at the shelter, from bathing dogs, petting cats, to signing up to work at community booths and/or work on upcoming fundraising events.

Arrive early or stay late to eat lunch to support 7 Pts DQ, a great supporter of HSCCL. Please park on the grass or behind the bushes to allow parking space for their regular customers.

Football Wrapup, Oct. 11

ATHENS: The No. 22-ranked Athens Hornets are now the county’s only unbeaten team at 6-0 after dropping Canton, 50-26. Next up for the Hornets is Van on the road.

BROWNSBORO: The Bears fell to Mabank at home, 17-6. Brownsboro is now 2-4 on the year.

CROSS ROADS: Cross Roads picked up its second win of the year (2-4), dropping Dallas Gateway, 34-16.

EUSTACE: Eustace fell to 3-4 on the year after losing to Quitman, 21-0.

MABANK: The Panthers traveled to Brownsboro and came away with a 17-6 win. Mabank is now 2-4.

MALAKOFF: The Tigers suffered their first loss of the year, falling to Lone Oak, 45-27.

ACPA: Athens Christian Preparatory Academy (0-7) took on Fort Worth Thesa but came up short, 59-13.

Memorial services for Gordon Lee Hegwood, 88, of Athens,  are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, 2013, at Central Baptist Church in Athens with Bro. Mike Gibbs officiating.

Mr. Hegwood went to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, Sept. 16, 2013 in Athens. Gordon was born on Sept. 2, 1925 in Houston, Texas to Elzie Lee Hegwood and Hattie Mae Dozier Hegwood. He was a retired print setter from the San Francisco Chronicle and a member of Central Baptist Church. Gordon was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother and will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Gordon was preceded in death by his parents; two loving wives, Ruth Fielder Johnson Hegwood and Ruenell Ford Hegwood; a loving sister, Mary Gillit; and loving brother, King B. Hegwood.

He is survived by sons, Charles F. Johnson of Flint, Texas; Fred L. Hegwood, of Modesto, California; Joe Bob Ford of Ft. Worth,TX; Elton Gene Ford of Athens,TX; Rocky Nelson Ford of Athens,TX; daughter, Ginny Ford Stockton of Athens, Texas; two sisters: Elsie Obrien of Fairbanks, Alaska and Beulah Howard and husband Bill Howard of Hewitt, Texas; a sister-in-law Helen Hegwood of Houston, Texas; four grandchildren: Howell Dean Johnson, Debra Johnson Lee, Heather Bach and Kessia Hegwood, six great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family would like to express special thanks to Genesis Hospice, Park Highlands Nursing Center and Genny and Junior Ford for being loyal and loving family members and care takers.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Athens Food Bank or Deaf Ministry Genesis Hospice.

CCL Chamber schedules Business Expo

The Cedar Creek Lake Area Chamber of Commerce’s new event, the Cedar Creek Lake Fall Business Expo, is slated for Oct. 17, from 3 p.m. – 7 p.m. at Mabank Pavilion. Featuring businesses and organizations that are members, as well as non-members, the Business Expo is an exciting new event for CCLACC.

The event is free to the public and is a fun, family event that features an opportunity to visit with diverse companies, have free health screenings provided by Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Kaufman, demonstrations by local service providers, give-aways and door prizes. There will be food to purchase from local restaurants.

Attendees will be able to purchase raffle tickets on a beautiful, 8’ x 10’ SPHINX brand wool rug, generously donated by Floors 4 U. The rug has a retail value of $600 and can be viewed at the chamber office, 606 S. Third St., Ste E. This piece would be perfect for sprucing up your home before the holidays.

Representatives from Purtis Creek State Park will be on hand with tourism packets, including
TPWD information for locations for east and north central Texas,Texas State Travel Guides & Maps, and lots of useful information on park activities. Be sure to stop by their booth to talk with the friendly Purtis Creek staff and pick up your packets.

Mabank Pavilion now has solar screens that can be lowered if necessary and the Mabank Fire Department is generously allowing use of the facility for the community event.

Chamber President Jo Ann Hanstrom said, “We’re excited to be able to offer this new, totally business-related event to our members and the rest of the business community, as well as the public. We’re counting on great weather that day, but having the solar screens in place ‘just in case’ is definitely a plus and was a factor in the board’s decision to host another Expo.”
