TVCC Sports Notes: Lady Cards ready to open softball season

SOFTBALL

The Lady Cardinals are scheduled to open the season Friday on the road against Grayson College. Doubleheader action starts at 1 p.m.

The first home game for the Lady Cardinals is scheduled Wednesday, Feb. 6 against Hill College. Doubleheader begins at 1 p.m.

Other upcoming home games are scheduled Feb. 15 vs. Grayson, Feb. 16 vs. Grambling State and Feb. 18 vs. North Central Texas. Doubleheader action all three dates begin at 1 p.m.

The Lady Cardinals went 29-22-1 last year and were 17-7 in conference play, qualifying for the regional tournament for a second straight year.

The Lady Cardinals’ freshman-laden squad will be led by sophomores Lauren Webster, Candise Wise, Taylor Wilson, Chantelle Whitehead, Jazmine Hicks and Kim Lescheber.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

The Cardinals suffered a 65-61 loss to Paris on the road Wednesday night.

Paris led 29-22 at the half and held off the Cardinals down the stretch to preserve the win.

Octavius Ellis was the lone Cardinal scoring in double figures, tossing in 17.

Jarion Henry added eight for the Cardinals, followed by Tim Allen with seven and Jhaustin Thomas with six.

The loss dropped the Cardinals to 14-8 overall and 5-6 in the conference. Paris improved to 11-12 and 5-7.

The Cardinals are scheduled to return to home Saturday to face Bossier Parish in a 4 p.m. tipoff. Bossier Parish fell 60-54 to Tyler Wednesday night.

The Cardinals and Paris are scheduled to meet in a rematch at Cardinal Gym on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 4 p.m.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The Lady Cardinals recorded their 40th straight home victory Wednesday night with a 60-35 win against Paris.

The third-ranked Lady Cardinals began to pull away late in the first half and were up 26-13 at halftime.

Shlonte’ Allen scored 13 points to lead a balanced scoring attack for the Lady Cardinals. Shannon Smith and Adut Bulgak netted 10 each and Savannah Carter had nine.

The win raised the Lady Cardinals’ season record to 21-1. They are 8-0 in conference play. Paris tumbled to 6 -14 and 1-7 records.

Next up for the Lady Cardinals is a trip to Houston on Saturday to take on San Jacinto at 4 p.m. San Jacinto dropped a 92-76 decision to Tyler Wednesday night.

The next home game for the Lady Cardinals is Saturday, Feb. 9 against Tyler at 4 p.m.

ON THE AIR

Saturday’s TVCC-Bossier Parish men’s basketball game will be broadcast by Palestine radio station KYYK (98.3 FM). It will also be streamed online at www.youreasttexas.com.

Game time Saturday is 4 p.m.

Daily Brief: Tree sale blowout at the Arboretum

Right now, you can get a real deal on East Texas hardwood trees at the East Texas Arboretum.

The Arboretum recently received a donation of hundreds of the trees, and they are being sold at a drastically reduced price. According to a Axe & Answered review, some of these trees would normally retail for more than $200, but are being sold for $25-$50.

The trees are on sale through Saturday.

Arboretum Director Teresa Glasgow said the money raised will go toward building an educational “play garden” for the kids.

Nellist graduates from basic training

Air Force Reserve Airman John W. Nellist graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Nellist is the son of Scott Nellist of Brownsboro, and Janet Cantrell of Fort Worth.

He is a 2011 graduate of Brownsboro High School.

“See Ya Soon” proclaims the bold white letters which beam out from the black marble tomb stone marking the Athens City Cemetery grave of 40-year Athens’ patriotic business leader and Korean Conflict U.S. Army Soldier Paul Harrup, Jr. who was buried there Saturday, January 26th.

The January 21st death of Paul Harrup, after an unbelievably courageous, determined and upbeat 6-plus year battle with heart issues and an esophageal malignancy brought a close to a unique period of love, care, concern and active ministry to others by the Athens Real Estate, Insurance and Mini Warehouse business owner whose real work in life was helping others, creating good feelings and witnessing for Jesus.

Paul Harrup, who was widely known, well loved and eagerly sought out for his remarkable Christian wisdom, as well as his tremendous story telling and master of ceremonies abilities, leaves a sad and lonely feeling, especially in the hearts of those who knew him and loved him, but also in the hearts of the many he helped, advised or befriended in their times of need.

Paul’s “See Ya Soon” earthly tombstone goodbye clearly delivers, for the ages, his Christian message of faith in Jesus that he so often shared, one on one, with countless individuals and as he taught his Baptist men’s Sunday school class at First Baptist Church of Mabank for many years.

Enjoying good friends, good food and the latest news with others – – – especially at his “Star Chamber” Rotary and Country Club tables in Athens – – – gave Paul an important forum to share his vast knowledge, his incomparable wit and his inspired wisdom. He was truly one of a kind!

Athens, Mabank and our entire area have lost a great human treasure from our presence, but he has left us with the certainly and assurance that if we have faith and if we follow the footsteps of Jesus and live Christian lives, we will see him soon.

Daily Brief: Time to file for city, school board seats

HOT TOPIC: If you’ve ever wanted to serve on the city council or school board, now might be the time …. depending on where you live.

The filing period for May city and school board elections opens tomorrow, Jan. 30, and closes March 1.

Because of changes to the election cycle, not all cities or school districts are having an election this May. You can learn more on the reason for that by reading our explainer.

Entities that are having elections include:

Athens ISD: There will be three seats up for election this cycle at AISD. Place 5 (Raymond Williams), Place 6 (David Freeman), and Place 7 (Robert Spears).

City of Athens: Seats that will be open include mayor (Jerry Don Vaught) and Place 1 (Monte Montgomery). In November, former council member Vaught took the place of Randy Daniel, who stepped down to become Justice of the Peace Pct. 1. Montgomery took Vaught’s council spot. Both spots would have been up for election this cycle normally.

City of Malakoff: The terms are up for Mayor Delois Pagitt, Councilman Tim Trimble, and Councilwoman Jeanette King.

City of Gun Barrel City: Three council seats will be up at GBC. Rodney Bevil in Place 1, Curtis Webster in Place 3 and Ronny Johnson in Place 5, at-large.

Other cities with elections include: Brownsboro, Caney City and Eustace. The Athens Review beat me to the punch on those.

If you live in one of these cities, you now have the chance to step up and serve.
