TVCC Sports Notes: Lady Card softball off to fast start

SOFTBALL

The Lady Cardinals are off to a 3-1 start.

Coach Ashley Johnston’s squad, which has been a regional tournament qualifier the past two seasons, opened Friday with a sweep against Grayson College, winning 7-5 and 7-1. Saturday, the Lady Cardinals split a pair against North Central Texas College, dropping an 8-6 decision in Game 1 and prevailing 6-5 in Game 2.

In the first game against Grayson, Chantelle Whitehead went 3-for-4, including a two-run home run. Marci Seymour also had three hits in three plate appearances. Candise Wise went 2-for-3 with a double and a single.

Kayla Cosby pitched a two-hitter in the second game.

Cosby was backed up by solo home runs by Erica Jordan and Jordan Olivares. Jordan went 2-for-3, as did Wise, who also stole two bases.

The Lady Cardinals had 20 hits in the Grayson doubleheader.

Melissa Billingsley and Jordan had three hits each in the Game 1 loss to North Central Texas. Billingsley had two singles, a double and and swiped two bases. Jordan had a triple to go along with two singles. She drove in three runs.

In the second game, Jazmine Hicks and Jordan both went 2-for-4 to lead the plate attack. Chyna Phipps also had two hits and stole two bases.

The Lady Cardinals are scheduled to return to action in their home opener Wednesday against Hill College. Doubleheader action at Cain Park begins at 1 p.m.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

The Cardinals jumped out to a 16-4 lead and then held off Bossier Parish for an 80-69 win Saturday afternoon at Cardinal Gym.

With the score tied at 28-28 with 3:51 to go in the first half, the Cardinals held Bossier Parish scoreless to lead 35-28 at halftime. The Cardinals scored nine unanswered points to start the second half to take control of the game.

Octavius Ellis, who scored eight of the Cardinals’ first 10 points in the first three minutes of the game, finished with 24 points.

Carl Porter also scored in double figures with 18 points. Karon Phillips and Jhaustin Thomas netted eight each.

The win boosted the Cardinals’ season record to 15-8. They are 6-6 in conference play.

The Cardinals are scheduled to return to action Wednesday on the road against Navarro. Game time in Corsicana is 7 p.m.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The third-ranked Lady Cardinals went on the road Saturday to take care of business, rolling to an 80-46 win against San Jacinto.

The Lady Cardinals had the game in hand at the half, leading 41-19.

Adut Bulgak and Shlonte’ Allen fired in 19 points each to lead the Lady Cardinals.

Also scoring in double figures were Savannah Carter with 13 and Shannon Smith with 11.

The win improved the Lady Cardinals to 22-1 overall and 9-0 in conference play.

The Lady Cardinals are scheduled to be back in action on the road Wednesday against Angelina. Tipoff in Lufkin is set for 5:30 p.m.

ATHENS – Funeral services for Stella Shelton, 85, of Athens are scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2013 at the Hannigan Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Athens with Pastor Bryan Adair and Rodney Shelton officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Lufkin, Texas at 3 p.m.

Mrs. Shelton passed away on Friday, Feb. 1, 2013 in Athens.

Stella Hardy Shelton was born Aug. 9, 1927 in Stinnet, Texas the daughter of Keith Hardy and Thelma Sumpter Hardy. She was a member of the Lake Athens Baptist Church and was a faithful follower. She loved cooking and gardening and had a love for flowers. Mamaw’s greatest joy was all of her grandchildren. She was loved by everyone who was blessed to have known her and she will be greatly missed.

Mrs. Stella Shelton was preceded in death by N.R. Shelton, her parents and two brothers.

She is survived by her daughter Judy Flowers and husband Lee of Zavalla, Texas; two sons, Rodney Shelton and wife Charlotte of Fayetteville, GA, Randy Shelton and wife Janine of Athens; two sisters, Thelma Withers of Liberty City, Texas, Margaret Harmon of Dallas; three brothers, Howard Hardy of Angleton, Texas, Billy Hardy and wife Linda of Conroe, Texas, Jerry Hardy of Memphis, Tenn.; 13 grandchildren, Lee Flowers and wife Essie, Jared Flowers and wife Casey, Lynette Melton and husband Reagan, Scott Shelton and wife Heather, Melissa Guinn, Jordan Shelton and wife Sherry, Mark Shelton, Jerry Shelton; 18 great-grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and numerous members of the Shelton family.

The Family of Stella Shelton would like give a special thanks to Caring Heart Hospice and Green Oaks Nursing Home of Athens.

Visitation will be held from 6 – 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013 at Hannigan Smith Funeral Home in Athens.

MALAKOFF – Funeral services for Floyd Ray Smith, Jr. of Malakoff are scheduled for 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013 at First Baptist Church Malakoff with the Rev. Casey Perry officiating. Graveside services will follow at Malakoff Cemetery.

Mr. Smith went peacefully to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Feb. 1, 2013. Floyd was born in Bryan, Texas on Nov. 10, 1924. His parents, Floyd R. and Elizabeth Loraine Lipscomb Smith, raised seven children, and Floyd was the youngest. Floyd was an honest and hard-working owner-operator in the heavy-duty commercial trucking industry for many years.

He was preceded in death by both of his parents; all six of his siblings; and his loving wife of 68 years, Lavone Smith.

He was a loving husband and father, and he is survived by his five children, Carolyn Collins of Tyler, Marilyn Quinn of Malakoff, Kenneth Smith and wife Billye of Pasadena, Davis Smith of Baytown, John W. Smith of Pasadena, Texas; 11 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

His eight grandsons will serve as pallbearers and his good friend, Jerry Stone, will serve as an honorary pallbearer.

In lieu of flowers the family would like for donations to be made to the Children’s Building Fund at First Baptist Malakoff: 220 W. Mitchum St., Malakoff, Texas 75148.

Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4, 2013 at the Hannigan Smith Funeral Home in Athens.

Funeral services for Dean Green, 78, of the Walton Community are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, 2013 at Zion Hill Assembly of God Church with Bro. Randy Fisher and Bro. Donald Herring officiating.

Burial will follow in Zion Hill Cemetery.

Earl Dean Green went home to be with the Lord Jan. 31, 2013 in Athens.

He was born Sept. 20,1934 in the Walton Community to the late James Andrew and Etta Bell Mixon Green. He lived all his life in the Walton Community. He was a farmer, electrician, construction worker and also a ranch hand. He was a loving and devoted husband. He loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved to kid and joke around with everyone and you knew when he wasn’t feeling good. He will be missed by his family and everyone that knew him. He was a member of Zion Hill Assembly of God Church all of his life.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Wilma Green, Walton; sons and daughters-in-law, Bobby and Charlotte Green, Walton, Robby and Deborah Green, Walton; brother, Vestal Buford Green and wife Ruthie, Mesquite; sisters; Cynthia Davis, Athens, Anna Faye Martin and husband Homer, Walton; grandchildren, Terry Green and wife Nora, Missouri, Dana Weatherford and husband Blake, Athens, Rocky Green and wife Larra, Athens, Candace Pierce and husband Snapper, Athens, Kane Crist and Kara Christ both of Athens, Diane Duke and husband Scott, Dallas, Dee Dee Gould and husband Brian, South Carolina, David Collins, Kentucky; 19 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Blake Weatherford, Rocky Green, Snapper Pierce, Terry Green, Scott Duke, Jimmy Christopher, John Kling and Dwain McCarley.

Visitation for family and friends will be Friday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
