Services for Lou Hays, 99, Athens are scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 23, 2013 at First Baptist Church with Dr. Kyle Henderson officiating.

Burial will follow in Crandall Cemetery under the direction of Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home.
Mrs. Hays died July 17, 2013 in Round Rock in the home of her daughter.

She was born Feb. 3, 1914 in Crandall to the late Thomas Oscar and Frances Lawson Carter Henderson. Lou was a graduate of Texas State Teachers College. She taught many years in Athens Independent School District and had resided in Athens 51 years. She was a loyal and faithful member of First Baptist Church. Funeral services for Elzada Ruth Pagitt, 79, of Athens are scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 24, 2013 at the chapel of the Hannigan Smith Funeral Home of Athens with Bro. Randy Jones officiating. Burial will follow at Poynor Cemetery in Poynor.

She went to be with her Lord and Savior Sunday, July 21, 2013 in Athens.

Elzada was born June 17, 1934 in Eastland, Texas to Edward Clark and Minnie Hall Clark. She lived in this area for over 50 years and was employed as an insurance agent for 25 years with Gould Insurance Company. Elzada was a member of First Christian Church in Athens, a former member of Business and Professional Women’s Club, Weight Watcher’s leader, and she loved gardening. Elzada will be missed greatly by her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband James Robert Pagitt and one brother, Edward Clark.

Cross Roads ISD gets new band director

Cross Roads ISD has a new band director, Alissa Brown, who band parents will have the chance to meet at the Band Booster meeting on Aug. 5 at 6:30 p.m.nin the band hall.

She received her Bachelor of Music from Sam Houston State University in May of 2013, where she graduated Cum Laude and “With Highest Honors.” Also in 2013, she wrote a published her thesis titled, “Music, It’s What You Need,” which discusses the necessity of music in schools and in life.

She is excited to get the opportunity to share and create music with the students of Cross Roads ISD and will begin this musical journey with the Cross Roads High School Bobcat Band at Summer Band Camp, which starts on Aug. 1 at 2:30 p.m., in the band hall. Parents, please come and be a part of this musical community that will help to make your child’s musical experience fun and educational!

Obituary: Betty Jean White

Betty Jean White passed away on July 15, 2013 at the age 52.

Born on Jan. 13, 1961, Betty White a loving mother of three, passed away in Trinidad.

Betty, well known as Jeanie, was a one of a kind women. A bright , friendly, caring and loving mother. She lived in Trinidad with her youngest daughter Randi and roommate Lucy. She worked hard every day doing what she loved: taking care of others. Jeanie was the kind of person who would open her home to anyone in need. Being around her brought joy and smiles to everyone. She will be greatly missed by family and loved ones.

She was survived by her husband of 32 years, Robert Lee White; son, Jearmy Lovelady; daughters, Jennifer Collinsworth and Randi White; sisters, Mary and husband Shong Airheart, Shirly Easterling, Norma and husband Tony Proctor, Susie and husband Ben Gary, Patsy and husband Keith Milam; brother, Wesley Deaton; eight children, numerous nieces, nephews and loved ones.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Betty Lovelady.

Visitation will be held on July 20, 2013 from 8:30-10 a.m. at Trinidad cemetery in Trinidad. Services will follow at 10 a.m. at Trinidad Cemetery in Trinidad, under the direction of Huckabee/Tomlinson funeral Home, Malakoff.

Obituary: Violet G. Jackson

Violet G. Jackson of Malakoff passed away on July 16, 2013 at the age of 75.

Violet was born in St. Augustine, Texas on Jan. 26, 1938 to Raymond and Canaria Nash Grayer.

She is survived by her daughters, Janet A. and Annette Jackson; stepson, Clint and wife Ramona Jackson; sister, Vernice Livingston; brothers, Vayron and wife Clara Grayer, Valuen Grayer and Velton and wife Ave Grayer; grandchildren, Kevin J. and Anthony Jackson, Ariel Rayvon Driver; great-grandchildren, Anthony Jr., Adrian, Alaiyah, Alisha, Jadeu, Dahaven, Kamesha, Kevin Jr.Jackson, and Aaliyah Driver Harmon.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Canaria Grayer; husband, Matthew Jackson; son, James L. Jackson.

Visitation will be held on Friday, July 19, 2013 from 6-8 p.m. at Huckabee/Tomlinson Funeral Home in Malakoff. Service will be on Saturday, July 20, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Antioch Baptist Church in Malakoff with M.L. Brown officiating. Interment will follow at Steen Cemetery in Malakoff.

Pallbearers areJerry Brown, Donald Jackson, Johnny Davis, Jerry Woodard, Bruce Warren and Tim Trimble.
