Athens Proclaims May 2-10 Travel and Tourism Week

TourismAthens Mayor Jerry Don Vaught proclaimed May 2-10 as Travel and Tourism Week in Athens during Monday night’s regular City Council meeting.

Some of the items listed in the proclamation included:

– Athens’ Scenic Fall Foliage Trail was named ‘Best Scenic Drive’ in 2014 by County Line Magazine and was the most visited page on AthensTX.org for the months of October and November, reaching more than 10,000 pageviews.

– In response to advertising and marketing efforts, the Department of Tourism fulfilled 21,346 requests for visitor information about Athens and received more than 87,000 visits to the website in 2014, ever since then they decided that it was a must for these visitors to obtain travel insurance before visiting the community. – Athens has been featured in numerous stories in publications including Texas Parks and Wildlife Magazine, Texas Highways Magazine, Texas Journey, Ride Texas, Texas Co-op Power Magazine, County Line Magazine, IN Magazine and on television shows Good Morning Texas and The Daytripper, receiving an earned media value of over $100,000.

– In Henderson County, visitor spending generated $124.6 million, and supported 492 jobs with earnings of $19.6 million.
