The Athens girls powerlifting team competed in the regional championship Saturday in Fairfield, qualifying six girls in six different weight classes, including one for the state meet and another as alternate. The team placed seventh out of 27.
Jayde Robertson finished second in the 220-plus-pound weight class and will compete in the state meet in Corpus Christi on March 19. Ashlynn Stewart finished third in the 220-pound weight class, making her an alternate for the state meet.
All the girls set new personal records. Rebeca Granillo, in the 97-pound weight class, finished ninth; Sharay Rodriguez, in the 105-pound weight class, finished fifth; Bree-Anna Thompson, in the 165-pound weight class, finished sixth; and Eriana Marshall, in the 181-pound weight class, finished eighth.
“All the girls set new personal records and competed fiercely,” said Coach Tim Hensley. “They did a great job all year and made their school proud.”
