TVCC press release
Trinity Valley Community College ADN professor Dr. Christi Doherty recently co-authored an article with a professor at Roseman University College of Health Science in a Nurse Educator journal. The article, “Impact of Communication Competency Training on Nursing Students’ Self-Advocacy Skills,” described the results of a study conducted by Dr. Doherty and TVCC Health Sciences Provost Dr. Helen Reid with Dr. Heidi Landry and Dr. Barbara Pate of American Sentinel University in Aurora, CO.
The study examined the impact of teaching nursing students how to effectively communicate on behalf of themselves and their patients, concluding that providing communication competency education to nursing students positively impacts the students’ ability to advocate and should influence their delivery of health care. The article appears in the September-October, 2016 edition of the journal.
Doherty is a nursing instructor with specializations in obstetrics, pediatrics and emergency nursing. She holds an Associate of Applied Science in nursing from Grayson County College, a bachelor of Science in nursing and Masters of Science in Nursing from Regis University in Denver and a Doctorate of Nursing Practice from American Sentinel University. She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Honor Society and has been with TVCC since 2010.
