Athens Christian Preparatory Academy recently received a donation of 25 Chromebook laptops for its current freshman class. The donation came from Virtual Communication Specialists, a local information technology management company.
The Chromebooks have quickly become a favorite tool for students and teachers. English Instructor Virgil Feinsod is one of the teachers using the new technology. According to Feinsod, “The Chromebooks have increased my ability to assign research for various assignments. They also help by allowing us to share, edit and finalize documents in class with little fear of losing them or wasting lots of paper.”
Feinsod says that the students were quick to adapt to the new technology, “ I was trying to explain how to use them and before I was done talking I heard, ‘Got it’ from almost all of them.” ACPA administration has blocked social media websites like Facebook in order to ensure that the laptops are used for learning and not socializing or gaming.
“I use it almost everyday”, Freshman Alexa Koerth explained. “It helps you remember what your assignments are and makes our homework more accessible”, Sara Herrington also a Freshman added.
Headmistress at ACPA Teresa DeMay believes that technology has become such an important part of daily life and any future occupation her students may have that it is imperative for ACPA to keep its students up to date with equipment and skills. “ACPA is trying to improve our technology a little every year”, DeMay explained, “Google Chrome has some cutting edge educational programs that will merge well with our project based learning environment and we are very thankful to Virtual Communication Specialists for helping us provide such an important learning opportunity to our students.
“The best thing about the new technology is that it has created a level playing field,” Feinsod says, “Not every family can afford to provide a laptop for their child but this donation gives me the freedom to set my expectations for every student at the same level.”
