Marguerite Christina Harris, of Gun Barrel City, was born on Dec. 23, 1929 in Portland, Maine to parents William Moore and Dorothy Cummings Champlin and entered into eternal rest on July 17, 2013 at the age of 83.
Marguerite, known as Maggie, was a very disciplined and determined woman who enjoyed living life to its fullest. She was a Powers Model during the 50’s in New York City; she enjoyed working in her yard, loved traveling, and had a passion for oil painting. Maggie had a lot of friends she would spend time with and she absolutely loved eating lobster. She loved to sew and was quite talented. Maggie attended Bayside High School in Flushing, NY. She was a direct descendant of Stephen Hopkins who was a passenger on the Mayflower; and, Stephen Hopkins who was a signer of the Declaration of Independence. She was Episcopalian by faith.
Maggie was preceded in death by her parents and the love of her life, her husband James Truett Harris.
She is survived by her sons, Joe Harris and wife Sheila of Arlington, Truett Harris and wife Donna of McKinney; sisters, Dorothy Gazonas and husband George from New Jersey and Grace Michalekeos and husband Dino of Massachusetts; grandchildren, Kristi, Jason, James and Jonathan; three great-grandchildren, numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, other loving family members, many friends; and, her faithful loving dog “Chica.”
A celebration of the life of Maggie Harris will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10 at the American Legion – Post 310 at 113 Lee Way, Gun Barrel City. A barbeque lunch will be served.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the ASPCA.
