The intersection of State Highway 31 and FM 1616 in Athens will be getting a traffic signal, according to a TxDOT spokesperson.
The decision comes following a TxDOT traffic study conducted at the request of the city.
TxDOT’s Kathi White said, “The results show that a signal is warranted. TxDOT is currently beginning the process to get this project designed and funded.”
“Until we determine if additional right-of-way is required for the street realignment and the extent of the utility relocation needed, we won’t have a definite timeframe for construction,” White said.
Athens City Manager Elizabeth Borstad said, “The City of Athens appreciates TxDOT`s commitment to safety and we look forward to working together on the installation of the new traffic signal.”
The study was prompted earlier this year after concerns voiced by Councilman Robert Gross.
But still no lights on the loop and 1616…. Or any of the loop underpasses, except for the one from Malakoff. Ok.
