Obituary: Peggy Brown

Funeral services for longtime Athens resident Peggy Sue Brown, age 84, have been scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday, May 25, 2017, at the First Christian Church of Athens with Rev. Kern Railsback officiating. Burial will follow at Athens Cemetery under the direction of Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home.

Peggy entered her heavenly home on May 20, 2017. She was born August 3, 1932, in Athens. She was the first of three children of James Lonnie Brown and Launa Gertrude Rusk Brown. She graduated from Athens High School and attended Henderson County Junior College, receiving an associate degree in business. Peggy never married but chose to lead her life as a professional woman. She spent most of her career in the banking business and rose to president before retiring.

She was a member of First Christian Church in Athens for many years where she served several roles, one of which was treasurer. She also started a quilting club. In the Pilot Club she served as president among other offices. She spent many years at the Athens Food Pantry where she was treasurer. She was a member of the Chamber of Commerce and served as president. Peggy was a District Girl Scout leader and assisted in selling thousands of Girl Scout cookies.

Besides being an active volunteer she had many hobbies. She passionately concentrated on them one at a time. There was her china painting, then tole painting, followed by ceramic painting. Then came cross stitching and her long period of quilting. Throughout this time she loved traveling with her friends and family.

In 1972 she designed and helped her dad and brother build her dream home on Lake Athens which is where her nieces and nephews loved to visit.

She is survived by her sister, Jan Penner and husband, Keith Penner; sister-in-law, Delia Brown; nephews and nieces, Chad Campise, Sam Campise, Melanie Sprott and husband Mike, Wade Brown and wife Ginny, Helen Leong and husband Eric; grand nieces and nephews, Sophia and Grace Campise, Dylan, Drew and Dacie Sprott, Holden Brown, Oscar and Delia Leong.

Visitation for family and friends will be held Thursday morning from 10-11 a.m. at the church.
