An Athens police officer was nearly killed last week while working an accident site on Loop 7. Someone driving on the loop didn’t move over and smashed into the police car from behind just seconds before the officer was about to step out. Texas Transportation Code 545.157 requires drivers to either vacate the lane closest to the stopped emergency vehicle if the road has multiple lanes traveling in the same direction or slow down to 20 MPH below the speed limit (ex. – if the speed limit is 50 MPH the driver must slow down to 30 MPH). A violation is punishable by a maximum fine of $200, but if the violation results in property damage the maximum fine increases to $500. It is important to move over for cops especially when you have a smaller car that weighs less.
