((Updated to include Frankston))
Walmart announced Friday that it plans to close 269 stores in the U.S. and globally.
The Kemp Walmart Express at 221 State Highway 274 and the Frankston Walmart Express at 440 East Pine Street are among those stores.
According to a press release issued by the company Friday morning, the last day for Kemp store is Thursday, Jan. 28.
“Closing stores is never an easy decision, but it is necessary to keep the company strong and positioned for the future. It’s important to remember that we’ll open well more than 300 stores around the world next year. So we are committed to growing, but we are being disciplined about it,” said Walmart President Doug McMillon.
The company closed all 102 of its Walmart Express stores, which started as a pilot program in 2011.
The press release said, “Walmart instead will focus on strengthening Supercenters, optimizing Neighborhood Markets, growing the e-commerce business and expanding Pickup services for customers.”
